Re: To everyone wanting to charge and connect to car stereo at the same time, a solut

Just a quick update for those interested.

I have now received my NewerTech 3 in 1 Audio/Sync/Charging Cable. Got it from macsales.com and it arrived from the US in just 3 working days Thats pretty impressive for standard £2 delivery - i would have been happy with that if it was a UK seller, let alone during a postal strike. About £12 all in - So 3 times cheaper than anything simular on the market, and thats including delivery from the States

As for the cable itself, it's great. Very good quality, and work's perfectly with my iPhone 3GS. No annoying issues with 'Airplane' mode messages (like with the Griffin Autopilot) it's seamless. Sound quality is good, no problems like the ones reported about expensive Monster one causing interference when charging. Nice and simple too, who needs a pointless remote control and massive bulky charger when the iPhone is probably the same, if not less, distance from you anway? I have a USB charging port on the way which sits flush in the charge outlet so i can actual close my ash tray cover - makes for a nice stealthy installation.

It's mad that more companies dont do stuff like this, can believe i had to order from the US - and then i could only find one.

Now i just need an active Brodit holder for perfect iPhone car Zen... get in car. drop iPhone in holder. go. No fishing for cables etc

This is exactly the setup I was after. I take it the NewerTech 3 in 1 Audio/Sync/Charging Cable will fit into the Brodit holder?

Thanks

Yep

With this cable plus Brodit, if there is a better incar solution for the iPhone for less than £60 I would like to hear it.

Cool, looks like I am going to get this setup now. I already have the brodit mount for my Mondeo. I will hide the wires behind the dash and hard wire the charger to the cig lighter.

Thanks for your help

If thats the case, it might be worth looking at this - 3G iPhone 2G iTouch Charge Adapter Cable w/Rca Audio on eBay (end time 24-Nov-09 22:54:02 GMT) (although it's a bit more expensive, it will be easier to hardwire).

I did seriously consider the Autopilot for a while, but discounted it for 4 main reasons - 1) Every time you plug it into the 3gs a message about Airplane mode popped up on the screen which needs to be dismissed (it's not fully 3gs compatible) which would bug me. 2) It has a large charger plug that wont allow me to close my ashtry cover. 3) I dont want or need the extra controls. 4) It's twice the price of the Newertech cable, which does a better job anyway IMO.

If it was not for the Sendstation or the Newertech cable i have, i would have gone for the Autopilot or maybe the Kensington LiquidAUX.

Just way to order this, but just to confirm. There is only the one connection to the iPhone (in the bottom ) then that is split? Or do you still have a caple plugged into the headphone socket at the top of the phone?

Thanks, and good find

EDIT: Just noticed it doesn't come with the cigarette connection part... can I just use one I have already and take out the old USB?

Re: To everyone wanting to charge and connect to car stereo at the same time, a solut

Thanks Autopilot, I have just ordered the Newertech Cable, a Proclip and Brodit holder (the clamp in the cable type) for about £50 all done. I've been looking for this solution for ages...

A quick couple of questions for any Brodit owners out there: Can you swivel the mount 90% to use TomTom in landscape mode? Is it a tight enough fit to stop the iPhone falling out?!

Great work, cheers!

Yes, uses the dock connection for both just like a normal dock. Cable splits half way down into USB and standard 3.5mm audio cable. Another advantage over things like the Griffin Autopilot is that you can use this cable at home to sync, charge and use with a hifi etc.

Just one connection to worry about and the dock connector gives a proper line out which gives you better sound quality than the headphone socket as it bypasses the iPhone/iPod headphone amp.

I cant remember where I got it, but the one I have in the garage already has the the two wires attached, this one does not, just means a bit of extra work.

BRODIT PROCLIP 915290 PASS THROUGH HOLDER - iPHONE 3GS on eBay (end time 02-Nov-09 15:56:45 GMT)

Thats is the Brodit mount I have went for. Really appeals to me that I can connect my new power cable in the bottom and have the audio cable into the cd player, so when I come into the car, all I need to do it pop my iPhone into the holder.
The above holder also fits iPhones with cases

This one does the same thing but is cheaper (and more compact). The only disadvantage over the passthrough is that you can't easily detach the cable.

That one doesn't state on the Brodit site as being able to accept phones in cases, where as the one I linked to does though. I didn't want to take the risk.

Re: To everyone wanting to charge and connect to car stereo at the same time, a solut

Ok, all my stuff has now arrived and I have just been out to the car and installed everything.

Before I started I plugged the NewerTech cable into the aux socket to see how it sounded.

I was very surprised on how good the quality of the sound is, much clearer and louder than going through the phones headphone socket. Very happy.

Next I installed the NewerTech cable into the Brodit holder. The fit was a little too tight and I needed to trim a little of the plastic off from inside the cable clamp to get a snug fit, so out came the Dremel. Once done the cable fitted nicely. One little problem (pics below) is that the plug sits higher than the base of the holder, this may be because the bracket is not made to fit the NewerTech? maybe I ordered the wrong bracket? but with a little bit more fiddling I could get it to fit better, but its ok for now.

Next I fitted the rest of the kit (pics below) I am extremely happy with this set up as it works great and looks neat.

Thanks for everyone's help

Re: To everyone wanting to charge and connect to car stereo at the same time, a solut

Thats odd, the newtech cable fits my Brodit pass-though perfectly (as it should do) and i think its the same one. Glad you got it sorted though

Hi again Auto,

I have a question,
when I did my install as shown above I did not connect the usb lead to charge it as my usb cig lighter socket had not turned up. It arrived last week and I hooked it up. The phone does not charge while plugged in. The light on the socket lights up to show it has power but the phone will not charge.

I thought the lead may be at fault so I plugged the usb into my laptop and hay presto it charges, so the lead can not be at fault. I have also tried a friends usb cig socket, the light also comes on but does not charge the phone, any ideas?

Thanks
Paul

Cant help at all sorry I have tried 3 in car chargers that provided a USB charge port and they all work, although 1 makes the iPhone ask if I want to switch to airplane mode.

This is another alternative if you want a fully fitted type with the wires hidden behind the dash.

Buy Carcomm Mobile iPhone 3G Cradle - CMIC-102

Comes with RCA phono plugs for line out, you can fit a phono to 3.5mm adapter if required.

if you have a case on your iphone the kensington liquidaux deluxe is a good buy, £28 delivered from the states, doesnt have the hissy interference from charging like my old charge/audio dock lead, holds the phone snug and is adjustable and it comes with a steering wheel remote. It is supposed to plug into the fag lighter and balance on a gooseneck, but i screwed it to a brodit proclip and removed the gooseneck and hidden the fag lighter plug/remote rx behind the dash, connected to a fag lighter socket i fitted in there specially for it.

How did you get £2 standard delivery option? coming in at more than the cost of the cable for me??? £9.20 ($14.99) for the black cable and £9.82 ($15.99) for the cheapest postage
