Wanna use my desktop PC for my iPhone instead of my laptop, how?

My laptop is on its way out unfortunately, so I wanna switch to my desktop for syncing with my iPhone.

However, whenever my iPhone is connected to my desktop my only option is to erase everything on my iPhone first...... but I dont wanna

Thoughts/options?

Cheers

Your only hope is to transfer all your data and media onto the PC, get iTunes setup and organised in the way you're happy with and then sync from scratch.

It will indeed erase all of your content... but if you've got the same content on the PC as you had on the laptop, big wow, it will replace it

Also bear in mind you can re-download Apps for free once you've paid for them. So if you struggle to bring your Apps over, download them again for free.

The one thing you'll not be able to avoid is the erase and re-sync as the iPhone or iPods can only Sync with one PC at a time.

No worries. I've had to do something similar a few times when I've rebuilt my PC. In fact, I'll be doing the same this weekend.

One slight glimmer of hope is if you can copy the entire iTunes library and all XML files in the same structure onto the PC, on a drive with the same letter (so, C: or D: as an example) so all paths are the same. You can then install iTunes and point it at the same location.

Sometimes it works and finds the library. Most times it totally ignores it.

I personally think a clean start is a better option as the time you spend now should be saved by having an easier life later on.

Will it seriously blitz all of my apps though? I doubt I can seriously remember them all for re-downloading

If you get the iTunes library setup first, minus Apps... connect the iPhone but don't Sync you might be able to use the 'Transfer Purchases' option by right clicking the iPhone and selecting it from the menu that appears. But I can't remember if this is an option before you have Sync'd.

Hopefully somebody else will clarify...
