Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

I went to the Apple Store in Bristol to buy the 3GS 16GB.

I spoke to the Sales Rep and he said that the Iphone is £440 + £10 activation to O2 and the Iphone.

I ask him whether he'll update the FW and he said yes.

I don't want FW 3.1 and I'm not sure whether he'll do the update. So I left to return tomorrow when I'm sure they won't update FW.

Will they actually update FW 3.1?

Can you not check the phone tomorrow ?, I assume it'll show you what Firmware it's running on.

They won't update it for you out of the box unless you want them to.

I assume its to down with unlocking the phone and the firmware needed. Why any one inexperienced with iPhones wants to slow down their phone with some amateurish software is beyond me

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

Thanks for all your replies.

The sales Rep said he needed to activate the O2 line and the Iphone.

I didn't understand what he meant. What if during activation and a message box pops up asking if he wants to update the Firmware?

I've never had an Iphone b4 so I wouldn't know what he was implying

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

Do you have to pay £10 for the top up? I want mine to use with simplicity and only want to pay £440.

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

Yes you do, that's an O2 policy. A couple of O2 store managers were letting people get away with not buying the top up at the launch of the 3GS PAYG... but those days are gone, you'll have to pay.

But you can make up for this by selling your PAYG SIM afterwards

I went back to the apple store this morning and bought the Iphone 3GS Black. The Iphone was activated there and the FW is 3.0.1.

I'll JB and Unlock it when I get Home after work

Thanks everyone for your help

If you buy from apple online you dont have to have it activated or pay the £10, plus you get Quidco cashback so win win

juust activate it with any O2 sim.

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

You should not be paying the £10 activation top up. They tried this with me and i told them they can stick it up em and il buy it online where i wont have to - Makes sense! . Some cheeky wee bint working at apple even poked her nose into my query to this stating 'oh we have to thats our policy!'.... eh .

This is a sales things - after the manager crept away, the sales dude told me they have been pressured into stating you need to buy it as they have tonnes of these stockpiled and want to get rid of them. Of course this £10 is a waste if your going onto simplicity.

Maybe its set in stone now or something but if you can buy it online without a fee then why pay instore for it.

Bottom line - i left the apple store with a 3GS and no extra fees.

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

I didn't want to pay for the stupid O2 Sim card, it's annoying. But, I couldn't wait for 7 business day + nobody at home to collect it, if I went online.

Re: Confused:Just leaving Apple Store

I refused to pay the £10 topup fee and instead used my existing o2 sim in the Apple Store to activate the handset. I wasn't paying for something I do not need.
