Some companies who request deposits refund the money through "airtime" where by they just use that cash to pay for line rental and calls. In the past I bought a nokia from o2 and I had to request the deposit back as it is not done automatically.

Ofcom have announced they're cracking down on "mis-selling" such as offering money back...

"Following a significant increase in the number of complaints about cashback schemes and other forms of mis-selling in the mobile market, the mobile network operators introduced a voluntary Code of Practice in July 2007 to tackle mis-selling and cashback issues. This voluntary Code did not lead to a significant reduction in complaints so in March 2008, Ofcom proposed new mandatory rules – called a General Condition.
Since Ofcom proposed to introduce new rules complaints have fallen from over 600 to fewer than 200 per month. But Ofcom wants to stamp out this practice altogether."

It wasn't a cashback scheme - O2 wanted the deposit as security against the first three months payment (line rental etc.)

Re: Has anyone that had to pay O2 a £150 deposit for their iPhone 3GS

I too had to pay this ridiculous deposit. Despite the fact i have a mortgage and have never missed a payment for anything in my life! (probably down to the fact i'm too 'sensible' to have a credit card and go nuts buying things and then have to spend a fortune paying it back! I guess that would make the 'perfect' customer).

Only for me O2 said it would be 6 months before i got it back (so just before Christmas then). I made sure to ask them though to confirm that the money would actually be transferred back in to my account when the time came and not through some poxy reduced bills or whatnot. They said i would definitely get the money transferred back.

All i can say is, they better effing keep their word ot they'll have one very angry Irish man to deal with
