if i update my iPhone but choose not to restore it from the back up (back to being a new unused phone) what would i loose?

is it just the app's or will i loose more (pictures/texts etc)

If you hit the update button then it will update and won't even ask you whether to restore from backup as it doesn't remove anything in the first place.

If you hit restore, then it will wipe everything from the phone and start again. If you restore from a backup then you'll be back where you started, but if you don't then you'll have wiped the phone clean.

i have upgraded to 3.1 a while back but i upgraded to 3.0 while jailbroken so i have a few missing apps as i had a folder app & i didnt undo the carrier name either
so i wanted to just clear it and make it normal again, just wasn't sure what i'd lose and have to redo, obviously my address book is ok

You'll lose Settings, Photos, Texts and any locally stored emails.

You can resync Contacts, Music, Apps (but not their settings), etc from iTunes.

You'll use everything. You can resync your apps and contacts/calendars if you have them on your pc but images taken on the phone will go, settings, application data etc etc
