Hi I was just wondering if anyone has a clue what the compass is for I don't understand it's presence what is it for? What does it do that the 3G didn't?

Some apps, cant remember the names combine gps and the compass so like on one of them, you can point the phone down the street and using the camera, gps and compass it will tell you whats down there, shops etc etc.

Its very handy actually. I use it quite a lot with Google Maps.

Try googling augmented reality, these apps use the compass and gps to find where you are and which way you're pointing, then overlay info on the lcd screen.

Found this very handy during my visit to Stratford Upon Avon. Found the postcode of places I wanted to go to, entered the details and then point north and of I went. Great device all round

Using the compass in maps is actually really handy. Whilst you can work out which way you're facing by looking at side roads and figuring it out, it's much easier and quicker to turn the compass on and just walk where you need to go.

There are some apps which use the compass feature for this specific purpose. Perfect id say

i used it when putting up my weather station as it had to be pointing north and I didnt know which way that was :D

I'm pretty certain that this was the reason for the inclusion. Muslims need to find the direction of Mecca when praying, and i'm sure this was designed for this market.

I can't believe nobody has given the two most obvious answers yet...

1) Sat Nav software. It helps with directional accuracy, especially when walking or standing still.

and,

2) To tell you which direction your facing. Alcohol is bad, mmmkay....
