iphone stolen but still in contract

Hi All,

I had my iphone (1st generation) stolen from me at weekend. I only have 3 months on the 18 month contract left to run, but did not take out insurance on it .

O2 have given me a new sim (a 3g one), but i have no phone what so ever! I was thinking is it possible for me to buy the new iphone 3gs on contact (so it's only going to cost me £180), use the old sim for 3 months while my current contract expires, and then swap the sim over to the new one and activate that on a new 18 months contract ????

cheers guys

Re: iphone stolen but still in contract

That is one option, it might be worth asking o2 how much it's going to cost buy out the rest of your contract and then get a new contract with the 3gs it will not work out any more money and will be a little less hassle, atleast this way you will only have 1 contract running at a time!

Re: iphone stolen but still in contract

Why not call them and ask if you renew now whether you can get the iphone sent to you early - it's worth a call surely.

Not going to work . You will need to take out the new contract as soon as you buy the phone. One way or the other you are going to be paying for the remainder of your contract+the cost of the new contract for the next three months(either paying the old contract off or letting it run alongside the new one)

Re: iphone stolen but still in contract

They might let you buy yourself out of your old contract. T-mobile did with me and it cost me far less than it would of if i'd paid the monthly price.

@Da7thson
Why not just buy a new 3GS on PAYG and use the replacement SIM O2 have sent you in that. Then when your contract expires move to a Simplicity tariff, possibly using something like the Quidco deal, if around at the time.

Re: iphone stolen but still in contract

Thanks for the posts guys. O2 customer services are a bunch of *******'s. I asked them if i could have a new phone from them on an 18 month contract but add the remaining 2 that i have outstanding on this one tagging on the end, they said no. I asked if they would do anythine else for me, the said no. All they would let me do is pay up in full my existing contract and buy a new phone, OR buy a pay as you go phone and i could use my existing sim in that untill my contract is up (but that will cost me over £400) for a new phone.

Either way i'm screwed!

This.

They are legally obliged to let you buy out your contact. If they are giving you hassle about it, hang up and phone back in the hope you'll get somebody useful.

Drop to the lowest contract and 3 months will cost you around £75 to buy out. Then sign up to a new contract and chose the tariff and phone you want.

BUT - Explain this to them, explain why and tell them that you want to stay with O2, with an iPhone and keep your mobile number. I'd be amazed if they said no if you ask the right questions.
