Unjailbreaking iPhone 3G

Just double checking in case I mess anything up here.

Currently have iPhone 3G on 3.0 firmware jailbroken using redsnow. Seems very laggy (only installed 4 apps) and WIFI keeps dropping out so I want to go back to how it was before and also update to 3.1 firmware.

I have deleted any apps I downloaded from Cydia and then I have taken a backup in iTunes 9.

I then clicked on 'Restore' in iTunes. It asks if I want to backup or not. Said no (as I had just done it) and it comes up with 'Restore & Update' or 'Cancel'.

It says that if I select 'Restore & Update' it will erase all data and media and upgrade the iPhone's software to the latest release.

Is this what I need to do? Am presuming so after googling etc. but just want to make sure I don't fry my iPhone.

Once done I presume I hit 'Restore from Backup' on left hand side to regain setings/contacts etc.?

Any help most welcome.

Re: Unjailbreaking iPhone 3G

Do the restore and upgrade and you'll get upgraded to 3.1

When finished you'll be asked if you want to set the iPhone up from a restore or as a new device. Chose the restore option if you want to get back to your previous state.

I'd personally be tempted to start from scratch though as a new phone, so long as you have your contacts, calendar etc backed up. This way you avoid any possibility of any JB data hanging around.

Cheers for that, how about if I can restore from a time pre-jailbreak if it lets me?

Re: Unjailbreaking iPhone 3G

I'll wait to be corrected... but I think you'll find iTunes just keeps the latest version of your backup as opposed to a selection of different states.

You'll more than likely have no issues at all if you do restore from backup. Even if you do, you can do another restore and start afresh

I'm just a fan of starting afresh with things like this... must be getting old and cynical.

Re: Unjailbreaking iPhone 3G

Cheers, am trying the restore from version few minutes before I jailbroke on August 31st. Will see how it goes. Like you say, if anthing is wrong I will start whole process again and restore as new phone.
