iPhone 3G 16GB won't sync

I've just got a secondhand iPhone off of eBay today, but it still has the previous owners stuff on it. I try to Sync but it just comes up with the message that it is doing it for around 10 seconds but the content is not updated. would that

I am using Itunes 9 on Mac OSX Leopard. Would some kind of reset be the order of the day or would that erase jailbreak capability?

Thanks

Definitely do a full restore and start from scratch. Goodness knows what problems you'll run into otherwise.

Re: iPhone 3G 16GB won't sync

Can you do that without erasing jailbreak/unlock. If so, how?

If not is it just a matter of doing it in iTunes through the normal method (IE the restore button)

Unlock is the most important as I am on the 3 network, jailbreak I am not too fussed about, though it's a nice thing to have

Thanks

Re: iPhone 3G 16GB won't sync

You have to be jailbroken to unlock these days, the standalone unlocking days are long gone.

In that case then, you're stuck with it the way it is... warts and all.

You can't restore as it will download the latest firmware - 3.1 - which can't be jailbroken. Your only option is to see if you can manually download 3.0 and when you click update, hold down shift at the same time so you can chose the location of the firmware yourself and point it at the 3.0 firmware.

If that fails, you're stuck with somebody elses data and configuration.

Would just re-jailbreaking it (using one of the guides on the web) not reset it to it's "original" state ie: at point of when the user first jailbroke and allow me to import my own files?

Re: iPhone 3G 16GB won't sync

Thanks for your help, someone on another forum has said pretty much the same. I am downloading the FW at the moment

Though I think the only difference is that it is the "option" key as opposed to shift for Mac

Also there are rumours that Itunes 9 will refuse to let me do this and that I should use 8.2, though maybe this is for the 3GS only

Even further update, have restored the iPhone to original 3.0, but the flaming thing still won't sync and has old apps on.

And although redsn0w shows as working its magic on the iPhone, the phone is still locked and no icy or cydia

Re: iPhone 3G 16GB won't sync

Another update, trying "erase all data and settings" now, says about 2 hours. Lets see if that works
