Manually manage without forced synch.

My Brother has came up to visit from the other side of the country and brought both his ipod and iphone.

He asked me to stick a ripped movie (I own the DVD) on his ipod so his girlfriend could use it the other day when she headed home and everything went great. He handed me his Iphone and asked me to do the same as he was going on a flight and needed something to watch. Never used an Iphone before and found all the settings greyed with deleting everything to transfer over one movie the only option.

Have they honestly neutered the ipod/itunes functions on the Iphone?

I've always manually managed my music as it is split between a few computers and the thought of having to go back to the bad old days of forced synching on one PC is a massive step back. Even worse is the fact that the PC that was used to set the Iphone up died months ago and the my Brothers CD collection went missing in a house move so the Iphone is the only copy.

Any way to transfer stuff onto the phone without synching?

There's an option to manually manage files in preferences. I'm a Mac user so not sure where that option is on windows, but it is there.

Can't be done without the PC the phone was set up on without completely wiping the contents of the library, and even then files can only subsequently be added on that PC.

Been reading round and it seems an App called "Air Sharing" may allow you to upload files (including some video formats) and play them within the app.

Yep, you can still manually manage music etc on the iPhone but for whatever reason you can only do it with one PC at a time. Quite annoying!

Most people have more than one PC nowadays and you can transfer files with ease between them so I don't see who or what exactly Apple is trying to protect by locking the phone like that.

All it does is make the process annoying rather than stopping it.

My collegue has an iPod classic and can load it up with videos then watch them on the work PC via iTunes, very annoying that I can't do the same!
