Iphone 3g Or Iphone 3GS ?

Hi all, could do with some advice !

I will be visiting o2/Carphone Warehouse this weekend to purchase an Iphone 3g 8Gb @£342. I can get it cheaper second hand but I would like the warranty and I'd know it's pristine.

Now what I've been wondering is, is the Iphone 3gs 16Gb worth an extra £100?. I'll using it as follows, I can live with a slower device, don't need a compass, and there can't be much difference between the cameras, is there ? 8GB should be enough as I'll have 100-200 Songs on there, the rest will be apps/games etc.

I could push myself the extra £100 but I'm not sure I'd like the credit card bill when it arrives !

So what's the best plan of action ?

think you answered your own question mate. You don't need the 3GS features and on the basis they use the same software and look exactly the same I'd go for the cheaper option

Seems like a stupid but sensible answer, get what you can afford.

I had the same dilemma a month ago. I decided to go with the 3GS, and I havn't been able to put it down since.

Is the extra £100 worth it? Can't give an honest answer because i've not owned the 3G, but if I didn't spend the extra i'd always be wishing I had, but then i'm a gadget man

Just thought I'd see if anyone regards the 3GS enough of a major improvement over the 3g.

I guess I did answer my own question !

Is the 3gs really that much faster ?

Guess I'll still mull it over until saturday.

when 3gs 8gb will be out the price difference will be smaller

There won't be a 3GS 8Gb.

I was walking down the street in an unknown town with a mate and he pulled out his 3G and loaded up google maps. As he started, I got my 3GS out of my pocket, loaded google maps, had a GPS location and knew which way we were walking with the compass....just as his google maps had finished loading.

Whether the £100 extra means it's worth it, only you can say. But there is a noticable difference.

A lot of people seem to this the compass is just about the built in application but its actually more than that. The application is just a trivial demo of an important future feature that will be needed for a potentional killer app already being demo'd on the BBC site. Its called Augmented Reality and knowing exactly which way you are pointing is essential to its operation. For more see:

OK, maybe I should have said I doubt there will be a 3GS 8gb. Why would they do that? I'm 100% up on my iPhone history but I didn't think that after releasing new models, they started to fit smaller drives to them. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I'll do some more reading around. It just seems an odd move to me. Let the old handset die out, I don't see why they'd bring out a smaller version. Yes, it can be cheaper, but does the memory really cost that much? It's one of the things that always falls in price pretty rapidly.
