Just got an iphone 2G - can't update on itunes?

Just got an iphone 2G - can't update on itunes?
Hi all, total Iphone noob here!

Just got my Iphone 2G 8Gb version from ebay - it's unlocked as I'm on T-Mo.
Installed the latest itunes & it found the iphone, let me rename it & did a sync easy enough, but every time I try to do the update to 3.0 itunes shuts down right at the end of the "extracting software" step.

Is it something daft I'm over looking?

If anyone has advice and/or can point me to some kind of noob guide I'd be very grateful!
