How to Disable Group MMS Feature

Hi

I have an unlocked (3.0.1) Iphone 3G on the 3UK network. All working great, MMS and Data etc etc. I have an issue, as I suspect many do, in that if I want to send an SMS to multiple recipients there is apparently no longer a way to do so, the iphone automatically reverts to sending the message via MMS as soon as you add the second recipient - NOT much use if the recpients dont have MMS, also the message becomes threaded, meaning anbody who replies (with a compatible phone) will reply to ALL as (usually without realising)!

What I want to do is swtich this off and revert to sending SMS messages to multiple recipients the "old fashioned way". If I turn off MMS this works, but Id like to do it a bit smarter than that.

I have found referecnes to editing the carrier.plist file, specifically a GroupModeEnabled key which does exactly what I need. This is where I run out of technical ability!

The carrier.plist files are all in specificl locations in /var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/ATT_US.bundle/ (or whatever the operator is) but as my phone is running on 3UK, and 3 dont have the iphone officialy I dont know which carrier.plist file to edit. I assume if I edit the O2 file (which contains O2 settings) it wont work. Also I dont really know how to edit this file anyhow as when I SSH it to my desktop and open it in wordpad its mainly nonsence.

Can somebody tell me what I need to do please?

Make a folder in theme > Bundles called com.apple.Unknown

Try copying the carrier plist file into there. I know you change carrier logos in the com.apple.Unknown folder but not sure if you can change the carrier plist in there.

Someone with more knowledge will no doubt be on here soon enough (saldawop maybe?) so i'd wait to see what others have to say before changing anything!

Thanks for the prompt response, hopefully somebody can clarify this for me.

I am happy with the copying bit, but I dont know how to edit this file, nor do I know which of the hundreds of them will impact my settings (if any). Maybe I need to make a complete new one that matches the operator name somehow?

iPod to Computer Transfer - Get Music off iPod and Copy to iTunes on PC

Download the free plist editor from ipodrobot. Thats what I use.

Re: How to Disable Group MMS Feature

Yeah no worries, I appreciate your help. You say to create that folder and copy the file in, but my problem is, which file? As I am using a 3 SIM I dont know which file is the "active one" if any, and therefore what do I use as the source? I assume one of these files in /var/.. must contain my 3 APN settings?

Hope that makes sense?

Ive only ever used o2 so not sure about changing carrier etc but you said the thing you want to change is in the carrier.plist?

What I would do is make the com.apple.Unknown folder in your Bundles folder and in there copy the editted carrier plist.

Like I said though, im just guessing at this.. im sure other people will have a better idea.

Re: How to Disable Group MMS Feature

Ok so some clever person but the a simple website together with a download link to the three.co.uk settings! I just used itunes and pressed "check for updates" whilst holding shift, changed the file type in the dialouge to ipcc and browsed to the settings file. Hey presto, I have the 3 operator logo, all the settings for MMS and Internet access are spot on, and the group MMS text is disabled and its back to standard SMS even for multiple recipients. Thanks whoever you are!

(all I had to do was rename the file from his site to .ipcc as it was originally .xml even though it didnt appear to be an XML file. odd)

ipcc settings for three.co.uk below:
