O2 vs T-Mobile for iPhone 3G performance

I've recently bought an iPhone 3G from Ebay, and I've got a O2 Pay and Go SIM in it, but I keep having problems with not being able to load data when on the move.
I normally travel from Northwood to Kilburn/Cricklewood for work and for most of the journey I can't get any data service on 3G.
Sometimes powercycling the phone helps, but most of the time it doesn't.

I was thinking of unlocking it and putting a T-Mobile SIM in it, as my other phone is on a Flext contract which is going to expire in a month.

My original plan was to wait for the T-Mobile contract to expire then port my mobile number to the O2 Pay and Go SIM, but with the problems I'm having with data on the O2 SIM I may just stay with T-Mobile and add Web and Walk to my package instead.

Has anyone gone from O2 to T-Mobile and have any experience on how the performance is like between the two?

why not just buy a simplicity sim - people use those without any problems? I bought mine on contract and its perfect everywhere.

I found the o2 PAYG 3g connection was weak as hell. took me ages to do the whole cydia bit when trying to unlock. It works well quick with my tmobile sim in though.

Surely the network performance doesn't vary depending on the tariff?

O2 have 2 different APN/data settings, depending on whether you're on PAYG or contract.

I'm guessing probably have some kind of prioritisation, so if a lot of O2 iPhone customers where in one area, the ones using the contract settings would get better performance over the PAYG customers.

Anyone know if O2 are willing to unlock PAYG iPhones? There's really no need to keep these locked, since somone has bought the phone from them so they're not losing any money; just not getting any more.

I think all networks do that.

Well if I have to get a contract to get decent performance on my iPhone, I'd rather re-sign with T-Mobile since they'll give me a discount rather than sign with O2.

Not sure if I want to go down the unlocking route though, seems to be some downsides and risks involved with that...
