Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

Just back from 2 weeks in Turkey. Data roaming switched off and only used wifi to connect to internet.

My bill arrived with nearly £50 of data roaming charges!

Just received a message from O2 saying

'We've noticed that we have charged you for data that you did not use when you were abroad due to a fault with the iphone 3.0 software. This will be refunded on your next bill'

Couple of points:

Is this a known fault with iphone 3.0 or O2?

Might be worth checking your bill if you have used your phone abroad recently even with data roaming turned off.

Dave

PS used wifitrak whilst travelling - superb app.

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

Hi just to let you know that I had the same problem. I took both iphones to spian for 3 weeks in August. Upon my return O2 stated that on one of my contracts the data roaming charges were over £400. I hardly every used it whilst in spain and told them it must be a mistake.
After sometime they admitted it was a fault with the iphone. The problem was that they said they would have to take the money and then refund it the next month.
Two things that made me angry.
1st- I cant afford to give away £500 (including line rental) in one month even if they would refund it in 4 weeks time
2nd Its there mistake why should they earn intrest on our money.
To be fair the lady at O2 was understanding when I pointed this out and worked a long ang greify way around it.
1st I had to cancel my direct debits and she would freeze my accounts
2nd When O2 failed to take the money I would be phoned and could pay the rental plus calls bills via switch over the phone
3rd 14 days later I will have to reactivate my direct debits

Although the lady at o2 was very nice, if I had not said anything i'm sure they would just have taken the money and not said anyhting about the Iphone glitch. Wonder how many people will be charged and not know

Cheers Tim

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

My sister's boyfriend just arrived back from Turkey to a £250 bill. He said when he landed he got a text saying data was chargable at £6/mb so he made sure data roaming was off.

He called o2 and they have refunded him £200.

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

I'm jetting off tomorrow to Turkey, I'm on the 2G iphone with a simplicity contract, I was planning on taking my iphone and disabling the data roaming etc but after reading this thread I'm wondering if I should just leave my phone here, does anyone know if this issue has been sorted or should I just leave my phone at home?

I went to italy on a business trip and on arrival, I received a text stating that I would be charged £3 /mb. Needless to say, I put my phone on airplane mode.

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

This is what the "Carrier update" in iTunes is for - it turns off the default roaming selection which i believe is sometimes left on and causes things like email and appstore updates to use the data connection.

it also wrongly changes the PAYG settings to the contract ones, so make sure to adjust your APN settings back if that's the case.

I take it this has all been fixed in 3.0.1?

Unlikely, as 3.0.1 was released only to fix the well advertised security threat relating to SMS messages.

3.1 should have it sorted though, or at least I'd be very surprised if not.

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

I rang today as my data stopped working after the update and they told me to set the apn to mobile.02.co.uk instead of idata.02.co.uk as I was on simplicity. Also set mms to wap.02.co.uk.

Idata.02.co.uk is for people on the iphone contract only he said.

Not sure if this will help your case?

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

I'm off to Berlin for the weekend tomorrow, and was wondering how do I turn off data roaming so I don't get charged?

edit: i found the option.

One other question though, if data roaming is off can I still make/recieve calls?

Yep, it just turns off data, doesn't affect calls or texts at all.

Re: Roaming charges under iphone 3.0 on O2

I just got back from Greece and have been charged 15p data charges. Ok, this is not a lot and I am sure I can spare the cash.

However, my phone was absolutely set to 'Data Roaming Off' and was understandably a bit worried about this. I also have 3.1, not jailbroken or anything and have updated the carrier settings a while back.

So I phone o2 and explain this (three times actually because the operator just wasn't getting it) who says there is nothing they can do.
At this point, I insist in talking to the technical team but also keep playing it dumb saying I am worried it is something I have done. They tell me to hold on and let me listen to the 'lovely' music for three minutes.
Then the girl comes back on and says they were 'changing the roaming settings at that precise point (conveniently brushing over the fact that the 15p was charged over two different instances on two different days) and that it was their fault. She also says she can't refund me 15p so she refunds me a full pound.

It was totally not about the money and I was actually worried some other charges would come my way because of incorrect settings (altough I doubted this). But I thought I'd share this little story, just in case anybody else experiences this.

The funny thing is though that I would have never noticed if it wasn;t for the MyO2 app... haha
