iPhone 3.0.1 news

You can upgrade to 3.0.1 and then run Redsn0w with a 3.0 firmware to jailbreak

If you've got a 3GS, while you're at it you might want to grab your iBSS and iBEC files whilst you still have a chance

3.0.1 firmwares - needed first for upgrading

Original iPhone - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....0_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 3G - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....0_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 3GS - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....0_Restore.ipsw

3.0 firmwares - you need to download the appropriate one here too as Redsn0w needs it to patch 3.1 once upgraded

Original iPhone - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 3G - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 3GS - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw

From Dev Team Twitter - "Early adopters have found that redsn0w JB *already* works on 3.0.1 (just point it at 3.0 IPSW!) Even for 3GS & ultrasn0w."

Re: iPhone 3.0.1 news

So as you might expect, 3.0.1 is branched from 3.0 with the old baseband and jailbreak/unlock vulnerabilities and released solely to patch this security issue. 3.1 is a new branch which will stop current exploits being used.

Re: iPhone 3.0.1 news

Just updated my phone to 3.0.1 and jailbroken

I found for some reason that redsn0w 0.8 was having problems with DFU on the phone, so I used 0.7.2 instead. Worked absolutely fine. Just remember to point redsn0w to the 3.0 ipsw not the 3.0.1 version

EDIT
Thought I'd add
I was on 3.0 Jailbroken
Updated to 3.0.1 in iTunes, therefore removing the Jailbreak
Run redsn0w 0.7.2 to rejailbreak
Spent ages going through Cydia installing all of my stuff!

You can, in future, use Apt Backup from Cydia . It will redownload all your Cydia apps ..it wont restore any settings, but its certainly a help.

Is there no way of backing up your jailbroken iPhone to save re-installing and configuring everything again after updating?
Only jailbroke my phone yesterday which took me all day including installing stuff lol

The hell with updating, or if I do, the hell with jailbreaking it again

Like saldawop says, install AptBackup in Cydia, run it, THEN SYNC WITH ITUNES! the AptBackup File is included in the itunes sync. Then do the update, rejailbreak then install aptbackup, which will allow you to restore those Cydia Apps

Not sure I want to update until 3.1 as I don't want to re-jailbreak and set it up as it is now and have to re-do it again in the not to distant future.

If anyone bothered to read the notes on Cydia before rushing headlong into this, Saruk (or whatever name the guy uses) states that he will have a patch for this in Cydia.

LOL! no, too impatient!

I did think about this, and wondered if the Dev Team would bring out a patch Looks like Saurik is doing it though. Wondered why he didnt tweet this out as well, I'd have caught it as I follow him!

Decide to give this a go this time round, but forgot the crucial "backup in itunes" stage

Still, I find restoring without a backup is a good idea - it clears out all the rubbish you didn't uninstall and just left on the iphone

I have done the update and now trying to re jailbreak with purplerain, problem is that it seems to be stuck with the pic of geohot on the screen and saying "done, wait for reboot".

I'm sure it did not take this long last time, its been 15 mins.

Any ideas anyone??

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Because no one is telling you to use Purplera1n, a 3.0 tool

You need to use redsn0w with a 3.0 firmware as its reference point after upgrading to 3.0.1

By the way anyone who can't click the upgrade button just download the 3.0.1 firmware file (links for your device here, there are 3 types of iphone, get the right one - iPhone 3.0.1 ) then hold shift and click on the restore button. it will let you select the 3.0.1 file

So those of us with a purplerain jailbreak are buggered?

If I'm reading this right I can upgrade to 3.0.1 which removes te jailbreak and unlock. then I've gotta re jailbreak and unlock via red snow right? I take it the guide for this is also on he iclarified site I used for the purple rain guide?

This one: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4447

Then I just follow one of the unlock guides right?
whats confusing me is the redsnow using 3.0 as a source bit. Is that something I need to do or is following the above guide all I need to do?

This one: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

It still works for PurpleRa1n users on 3.0, I am one.

You get a 3.1 firmware file and use iTunes to upgrade automatically, or shift-click restore and select the file if it's being difficult (i.e. botched upgrade)

Then you use Redsn0w and point it to a 3.0 firmware file for your device when it asks. It will use that to patch the 3.1 on your phone.
