Winterboard for dummies?

Hey guys, I donwloaded winterboard. then got a lock screen wallpaper downloaded.

Thing is I don't know how the hell to set it up lol.

Is there a really easy to follow user guide or something? And is there no way of previewing themes wallpapers etc before downloading?

Hope you can help me out here!

RT

When I first started I found the best way was to search You Tube, seeing it done on screen is easier to follow than a typed instruction (for me anyway)

If you use Google to look for sites that preview new themes and then once you have the name you can search for it in Cydia etc.

Re: Winterboard for dummies?

Cheers guys,

I've seen a few posts here. But they all seem to be with people who know what they are talking about lol. I don' know jack, hence why I asked for a dummies guide lol.

I'll have to have a look on youtube and watch it being done I think I'll learn better this way too.

anyone know any links before I go searching the tube?

Re: Winterboard for dummies?

Once you install something onto winterboard leave cydia and log into WB, move the theme down to the end of the page and touch to tick. Then scroll up and tick anything else you want to use i.e. un-unlockable etc. then close winterboard. The Springboard will re-load with your choices applied. winterboard works in procedure, theme then others, so the theme needs to be at the bottom with other things above it

Make sense ?

Yeah, things at the top take priority. So you can mix a theme with your own background by sticking "user background" (and picking it in the normal iPhone settings) above the theme and ticking both.

Re: Winterboard for dummies?

if you go into cydia and download a theme it will then appear into your winterboard and you can just turn that on so to speak and then after a respring of your iphone you will be running a theme and that is all that there is to theming really, once you get a bit more comfortable with winterboard and themeing, you can start to modify themes, by using a program such as winSCP and SSH into your phones filesystem and change a few themes and modify them yourself, this can be more rewarding when you set yourself a good theme that you are entirely happy with.

The iphone screenshots theme previously mentioned is a good place to start looking and getting ideas for what to use, and also i stumbled upon a decent thread on a different forum that gave me many ideas here

not sure if im aloud to talk about other forums in here so if not, someone can delete the link i guess and sorrryy
i would give buuf2 a look as a start, as im running it at the moment and think it looks canny , ooh and leopardUI if youre moreinto a cleaner Mac style look

if you have time/can be bothered, there are decent tutorials on youtube on how to make your own within photoshop, id rather just lift them from other themes and then add them to my current theme to be honest

if you want a complete theme then thats not the best way. you just end up with a collection of random icons

do this:

Search Google for iPhoneBrowser - download and install it.

Downloads - iphonebrowser - Project Hosting on Google Code

once installed click the "go to location" link at the top - then click Winterboard themes. In the browser (on the left you will see all the themes you have installed. Click the + and expand your chosen theme. you should now see an "icons" folder. click the icons folder and its contents will appear in the window on the right.

all you have to do now is download the icons for your chosen theme i use Orbz (>>>> Orbz v2.2 for Winterboard <<<<) because its so well supported.

Copy the icon to your PC - rename it so it has the same name as the app, then drag and drop the icon into the icons folder (right window in the browser). once you have done that for all your chosen icons just respring and they will appear

yes well obvisously i dont just download random icons and make a mess of a theme...
they would need to fit in with the theme.
also there are usually some redundant icons, from apps you dont have, in a theme that can be used for some things. i realise that supermonkeyball and icopter are obviously nowhere near each other so this only works for the odd thing.

Re: Winterboard for dummies?

No, it a USB client that uses the iPhone cable....

i took this from a post i made a while back:

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE UNSURE HOW TO MOVE FILES IN AN EXPLORER TYPE WINDOW. THIS IS NOT DIFFICULT TO DO BUT IF YOU AREN'T COMFY DOING IT THEN DONT!!!

I'm happy to help but i wont be providing a walkthrough as i dont have the time.

As i say only do this if you are comfy and dont mind restoring if you cock it up from time to time. I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU COCK IT UP, YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I've never really borked mine, but i was an IT guy for 10 years.

Gradience is my favourite theme, loads of icons.

It get a complete set of icons (bearing in mind there are over 15,000 apps on the store) you need to be able to SSH into your phone. (WinSCP is the best - google it)

If you go to /private/var/stash/Themes.QA4f5Q

you will get a list of all the themes (DL'ed from Cydia) if you open one up you will a number off folders, one of which is "icons" this where all the theme icons are kept.

i.e: /private/var/stash/Themes.QA4f5Q/Gradiance v3.theme/Icons

You can download icons to your PC and copy them over using WinSCP. Not all apps will have an icon so i tend to use an icon that i'm happy with for the application.

you need to ensure that the icon you want to use has the same name as the app you want to use it with. THis is case senitive for example. If you wanted to change the winterboard icon then the ico your going to use needs to be called "WinterBoard" - not "Winterboard" or "Winter board" (note the space - the icon name MUST be the same as the app.

I'm just starting to get my head around the iPhones file system, its not too complicated but i know next to nothing to some of the guys on the forum below.

The best place i have found for theme support is:
MacThemes Forum / iPhone Releases

It can be a real labour of love to get them all right.

Hope that helps

the major difference is speed, iPhone browser is USB and faster than SSH if you move large chunks of data from device to PC or vice versa. I use both, but mostly iphone browser just because WiFi can be a bit flaky, but that said since 3.0 my wifi has been solid as a rock.

Re: Winterboard for dummies?

I've found a theme I kinda like for now. downlaoding now.

Is it easy to remove when I'm tired of it?

Also I've seen a video of putting a moving background on the 3g. Is this possible on the 3gs? I'm guessing its a battery sapper though?
