Thumbs up iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

I'm really surprised more people are not using Iphone Browser to transfer/modify their iPhones. It is much more straight forward than SSH, and as far as I know (and I stand to be corrected), you can do the same things as SSH, with less hassle.

Download link:

Downloads - iphonebrowser - Project Hosting on Google Code

This might be helpful for those who (i) do not have wireless, (ii) are perplexed by SSH or (iii) want a quick USB link alternative.

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

Yeah, it is very good. The name of the program makes it sound like one of those spam/adware programs you find on google, but this is legit!

Thing I find about SSH is it takes ages to get it to just work to start off with - i.e. to accept an FTP connection. This just works

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

I tried using ssh last night I just couldn't get my head around it. Found I confusing creating files inside of files etc.
Is this easier?

I'm no good with this sort if thing tbh as it's all new to me

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

The other thing I don't like about SSH is the way it sets everyone up with the same username and password - in day to day life you probably wouldn't end up threatened by it, but its certainly not a cool move from a security point of view. Certainly as much of a risk as any SMS "exploit"!

Just use iPhone browser, it lets you browse the iPhone just like a hardrive, and you can drag files to and from it. For example, if you want to send a new theme to the iPhone. Download the file to your desktop from a website, open iPhone browser (and link it to your iPhone via USB), and drag the downloaded theme file into the theme folder on your iPhone - Job done!!

It is so simple, I can't believe that iPhone browser (and similar programs) are not far more widespread.

It makes it a joy to transfer themes/apps and to modify stuff on the phone.

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

Just had a quick play with iphonebrowser. Couldnt find a search function. Is there one? I like to make icons to go with my theme and its a PITA to go through the whole applications folder searching for each new app thats been installed.

I find that iFunbox is much quicker, more stable and even easier to use than iphonebrowser. It is also much more frequently updated and supports things like drag and drop music etc

You know the iPhone just shows up as a device on Windows Explorer, right?

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

A search function would likely work in the same way as it does on FTP - slowly, opening and closing one folder at a time.

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

I don't really play around with themes much and just need to copy the occasional file across so still just jump in to terminal and scp stuff across. Maybe if I did more themeing then I'd start to use these browsers. They do look good though

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

I want one of these programs to be able to run from a USB stick (i.e. no installation required), and to not require the .NET framework to be installed, so I can use it on any PC. Haven't found one that fulfills both of those requirements so I stick with SSH.

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

i love Iphonebrowser and find it much less hassle than SSH as it just 'works'. SSH you have to mess around with a fair bit, plus its still hit and miss once you do get connected as I often get disconnected as soon as my Iphone goes in standby

Anyway, What I find a bit annoying about Iphonebrowser is it automatically backs up any files you delete (eg Themes).

If you click on the backups link it takes you to a place on the C drive so I dont know if thats the only place it will back up your deleted files or if there is anywhere internal on the iphone itself?

I guess most of you guys are using windows? SSH should just work and if using the terminal in OSX or Linux it works just fine...first time, every time.

Re: iPhone Browser - Ultimate Alternative to SSH

Been using iPhoneBrowser since I got my iPhone last year - as at the time I didn't have wifi, so couldn't use SSH. I still don't use SSH; can't be bothered since iPhoneBrowser works fine for what I want to do
