Using a Three sim card in an iPhone 3GS

Hi folks, wondering if anyone could help me, I've been doing a bit of research as I'm thinking of buying a PAYG iPhone 3GS and unlocking it to use my current Three sim. My current contract is £11.50 a month for 500 minutes/texts a month (no WIFI or 3G however) which is perfect for me and I'd rather not lose it, although my contract runs out in a couple of months.

I understand that if I buy PAYG I get 12 months free WIFI and 3G, but is this compatible with using my 3 sim? Can I surf for free if I've got my 3 sim card in the iphone?

I'm thinking I can't do this and my best bet would be to buy PAYG, jailbreak it and get one of these o2 simplicity cards I've been reading about. Any advice?

I love the iphone , just wish it wasn't so damn expensive .

Yeah you can only use the data that comes with the SIM - you cant mix and match.

No data on an iphone would render it almost useless

Have a look at my data packages thread for a few ideas

Re: Using a Three sim card in an iPhone 3GS

So with that add on (and within fair use limits) I could access the internet via the iphone any time?

That seems pretty good as long as I can access the net when I'm out and about.

This may seem stupid but is there any difference between wifi and access to the internet? 3G (from what I understand) is just a watered down internet service (or WAP even) so I'm not fussed about not having 3G access, or should I?

Any help appreciated.

Oh no, 3G is like having an ADSL connection when you're out and about. Proper websites, proper speed.

WiFi offers you the same website but happens where someone has a wired internet connection that they then serve out wirelessly - like you may have in your home, in hotels etc.

The 'WiFi' that o2 sell is a universal access to BT hotspots - but the iPhone has the technical ability to connect to any wireless network whether you have the bundle or not provided it has the password - many don't have one

Hope that helps.

Re: Using a Three sim card in an iPhone 3GS

Aaahh. So just having internet access doesn't mean you can be connected to the net when you're out and about, i.e. I wont just be able to connect to the net whilst on the bus to work?

I don't fancy putting in a lot of putting in passwords and trying to find a wireless signal wherever I am.

I didn't realise 3G was so useful, and now the internet add on doesn't seem so great...

The 3G would let you connect on the bus for "free" as long as you have unlimited web data
