IPhone GPS: voice and 3g?

Hello,

I am plannning to buy the iPhone 3GS and the main feature I am interested in is GPS. Does GPS on iPhone work in the same way as, say, a TomTom? Can a voice be activated to give step by step instructions if you are driving? e,.g. turn right in 100 metres.

Finally, does 3g need to be on for GPS to work? Or can it work in the same way as a TomTom that isn't connected to the internet because the map is pre-downloaded? The reason I ask this is because I like in the UK but would like to use the phone in USA without having to pay hefty roaming charges.

Thanks!

The phone can be used like TomTom....once you've bought TomTom for it and installed it.....once it's been released

There are a few navigation programs around such as Sygic and Navigon that are out at the moment. TomTom should be released in the next few months.
And no, you don't need 3G for these apps to work. That's not to say that they don't download any data at all, as they sometimes do. But they don't NEED to to actually work.

I think I saw the Navigon app was £40! In that case it would be cheaper just buying a map for my TomTom.
