Buying an iphone 3GS in Italy

I will be going to Rome for a few days in September and was hoping to get a new 3GS unlocked non contract phone. Can anyone tell me if it is easy to purchase one over there if you are not an Italian resident and is t better to got to an Apple store or one of the phone companies stores such as vodafone?
