Just bought a new i-phone. Want to use it on Vodafone, what do I need to do?

Hi,

Sorry, bit of long title there! I have just bought a new i-phone 3G. It is a PAYG on 02 but I want to use it with my Vodafone contract.

Basically i dont know what to do? I have looked at many sites, and everybody seems to say different ways of doing it. I dont want to put 3rd part apps on I just want it unlocked to use a Vodafone sim, thats all!

I have been told you cant unlock with software, that will only jailbreak? Also when i connect to itunes will it be ok with a vodafone sim?

Any help would be great!!

Hiya, I've also just bought an iphone 3GS - great gadget.

Anyway, if you want to unlock your phone to use on other networks, then you are going to have to 'jailbreak' it which basically modifies the s/w on the iphone to be able to run 3rd-party apps and programs. You'll then be able to unlock the phone to other networks using another 3rd party program (redsn0w I think) Either way, you'll need to jailbreak your phone before you can unlock it - this will invalidate your warranty and you could be faced with a rather fancy and expensive paperweight if things go wrong!

Hope that helps. FoX

Re: Just bought a new i-phone. Want to use it on Vodafone, what do I need to do?

The sim issue is only for activating the phone, stick the o2 sim in, plug into itunes and get it activated.

Once you've done that you'll need to jailbreak, follow these instructions:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

Once your phone is jailbroken you can unlock with these instructions:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 3G, 3GS Using UltraSn0w

And you should be done!

redsn0w for the jailbreak, ultrasn0w for the unlock.

Also, shouldn't be any warranty issues, if anything goes wrong you can restore in itunes and have the phone back to how it was out of the box. Send your after a restore to apple and they will not know its been jailbroken.

Finally, as long as you follow instructions and don't mess changing things you dont understand you should be fine. Ive never heard of anyone completely destroying their phone. Again, if anything goes wrong a restore should sort it.

Good luck

Did they fix it so push notifications work with unlocked iPhones yet?
