Backing up to Hard Drive

Im guessing the answer is no but I thought it better to ask. Is it possible to back up purchases/playlists etc to hard drive?

I have backed up the playlists before but when I put it onto my new PC it was listed as restored playlists (or similar) in iTunes, which I would rather didnt happen.

Could I , for example, just copy ALL my iTunes folders on to my external hard drive, load new Operating System, install iTunes, then just overwrite the new folders/files with the ones off my hard drive??
