I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

My wife has been given an iphone (16gb 3G I think) by a family member who has just upgraded to the new one. We wanted to reset the phone so we went into Settings and selected the Erase all data and settings option, thinking this would reset the phone to factory settings, the apple symbol appeared for a few minutes and now the phone appears to be in emergency calls only mode with a picture showing a usb cable and an itunes icon.

What do I need to do to get the phone working again ? I want to use a Vodaphone sim in it so it needs unlocking

start by connecting it to itunes to activate. then jailbrake, then unlock.

Re: I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

You might need an O2 SIM when you first activate it in iTunes though. Not 100% sure on that but it's what I did with my new one, then I went straight to jailbreaking.

Re: I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

Im pretty sure you need an o2 sim to activate it with itunes...

Once you have activated it though just use redsn0w for the jailbreak and ultrasn0w for the unlock.

Phone seems to be back to normal, need to track down an O2 sim and look into the jailbreaking / unlocking guides.

Re: I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

You only need the O2 SIM for literally seconds whilst it activates. Once that is done, you don't need it any more.

I managed to unlock and jailbreak my unregistered and apparently unlockable 8gb 3g iphone without an o2 SIM, it connected to itunes just fine.

Regardless of all the other stuff, that's a bloomin expensive thing to be given for free, second hand they could have still got a bundle of ebay for it

Honestly i dont really know. I got the iphone from a friend that had literally picked it up as a warrenty replacement that day. I hooked it up to the PC and it connected to ITunes straight away and let me register the device and open an itunes account all without a sim card in the phone.

As for the unlocking.... i had baseband 2.30 rather than 2.80 and after some research i found i could only downgrade that if i had bootloader 5.08. I downloaded fuzzyband to the iphone and it informed me i had bootloader 5.09 (and it still does) so according to every source on the web i was screwed but i thought what the hell, and gave it a try. The app said it was successful and it had changed my baseband so i quickly downloaded ultrasnow and 2 mins later my T-mobile sim worked fine.

I went from

BL.... 05.09
BB.... 02.30.03
OS... 2.21 (5H11)

TO

BL.... 05.09
BB.... 04.26.08
OS... 2.2 (5G77)

Re: I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

What did you use to jailbreak it - Quickpwn or Redsnow? and did it insist you go down to 2.2 from 2.2.1?

I'm looking to jailbeak & unlock a 2.2.1 3G iPhone but can't find out whether Redsnow will jailbreak this version. Ideally I'd want to use ultrasnow to unlock as its seems so easy to use.

I used Quickpwn but had already restored to the earlier firmware

Ive just updated to 3.0 within I-Tunes, jailbroke with redsn0w and then unlocked with ultrasn0w. All is working perfectly.

Fuzzyband clearly now works with bootloader 5.09 and my baseband is still 04.26.28 after the update to 3.0 (7A341) but not sure if thats supposed to be the case or not? My phone was asking to be registered after the initial update to 3.0 but once jailbroken the registration request had gone so i used wifi to connect to cydia and download ultrasn0w.

I can't say I understand much of that, but, can I jailbreak / unlock mine without having to register it using an O2 sim, my wifi is working

Re: I think I may have knackered my wifes iphone

You dont need an 02 sim at all, even on a fully restored phone.

Redsnow will jailbrake it and activate it, then use ultrasnow to unlock.

There are lots of tutorials on Iclarify, it is very easy. Alternatively you can look at Mac Rumors: Apple Mac Rumors and News You Care About in the forum there is a dedicated hack section.
