| Re: wifi app for iphone 3gs
In simple terms (without trying to over complicate it...), you can connect your iPhone to
1. wireless networks (wifi) - just like a computer. This provides an Internet connection.
2. or mobile phone networks - just like any other phone. This provides a phone connection, or in the case of a 3G phone like the iPhone, also provides an Internet connection.
The wifi connection can be made anywhere there is wifi available. At home, you presumably have a broadband router that has wifi built in. So, when you are at home you can connect your iPhone to your home network, and hence to the Internet. This will be a much faster connection than a 3G mobile phone network.
However, a wifi connection only has a short range - normally just within your house, or an office, or hotel, or bar/restaurant/coffee bar.
So, when you are at work, you cannot connect to your home wifi - it is too far away. You would have to connect to a wifi network where you are. Unfortunately, most workplaces do not allow non-authorised devices to connect.
But at work you should still be able to use the 3G mobile phone connection to access the internet, but it will be much slower.
Or you could try finding a local wifi point that allows anyone to connect. O2 provide a directory of the ones you can connect to as O2 subscriber (if you are). For example you could try finding them on your lunch break.
Your iPhone should automatically switch between wifi and 3G networks, and also automically inform you of any wifi connections available. However, as said earlier, the connection may still not allow you to connect without the proper authorisation.
Hoped that helps.
