Can't save a new contact

I'm running 3.1 and trying to track down whether this is a bug or something anyone else has experienced. Each time I try to create a new contact from existing data (google maps search, received call number), it fails. I press save as usual, but as soon as I go to contacts, the contact is there, but at the very top against a hash (rather than filed under its first letter alphabetically) and all the address details, phones, links, etc are gone. I can add a contact manually by going to contacts and typing something in, no problem.

I know it sounds like a bug in 3.1, just wondering if anyone else has had the problem.
