Buying a new Iphone dilema

Hi guys!

Looking for a bit of advice or a "what would you do" in this kind of scenario?

I'm due an upgrade tomorrow on my O2 account, I've had my heart set on getting an Iphone for months now and was all set to shell out £185 for a new iphone 16gb.

One of my mates at work has an iphone 3g 16gb in white in immaculate condition (he really takes care of things) and It is always kept in it's leather pouch.

He's said that he'd give me his iphone and pay the £185 for the upgrade.

Now do I

A. buy a new iphone for £185

B. take my mates off him and he pays the £185 for the new one.

I'm not too fussed about the "new" features etc...

The only thing really holding me back is the warranty... As far as I know my mate has about 3 months left on his Iphone, obviously the new one would come with 12 months warranty.

Any advice/thoughts welcome

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

You could always use Carphone Warehouse & trade your old phone in that way you get some money off your 3gs
edit to say I got the 3gs & it's much faster than my 3g for me that alone makes it worth having

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

No matter what condition it's in it's not new. I'd say thanks but no thanks to you're mate and get the new one.
I'm one of those people that has to have new otherwise I wouldn't be happy, plus there's the warranty issue as well.

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

I'd buy the new 3GS, he clearly thinks it's worth paying £185 and giving you his 3G in order to get his hands on a 3GS.

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

If you don't mind getting tied to a £35 x 18/24month contract, then get the new one. (a big thing for me)

If you want to use a cheaper month to month tariff like simplicity ie £19.58 for a near fully functional iphone style tariff then buy your mates as its a bargain. You're looking at £270+ for a mint 16gb 2nd hand.

You could always pay £59 for another year of applecare warranty?

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

Thanks for the replies people!

Deffo going for a new one

It wouldn't feel the same shelling out £35 a month for something essentialy second hand and I'd be gutted If It went wrong a few weeks after going out of warranty.

Now the next problem I have is that none of the carphone warehouses or O2 stores near me have any, I work in Redhill and live near Croydon. Doh!!!

Re: Buying a new Iphone dilema

Get the 3GS then wave it in his face and mock him for having an inferior iPhone

Oh and BTW: if you go to mobiles.co.uk through quidco.com you get £60 cashback if you take out an iPhone contract with them. Thats what i've done for my wife's 3GS

Got to say it's a bit of a no brainer really...

£185 for a 2nd hand 16gb 3g iphone with 3 months warranty or £185 for a brand spanking new 16gb 3gs with 12 months warranty...

He was getting the 3G for free from his mate who would then pay the £185 and take the 3GS in its place.
