How to copy my own DVD to my iPhone 3GS

Please please help, my iPhone is still very new to me and although I love my gadgets I don't always know how to do what I want with them!

I know that there are other threads on this subject but I need some answers in lamens terms (please)

Could someone please tell me in easy to understand steps how I put one of my own DVDs on to my iPhone, I have googled it and ended up with a headache, I'm getting easily confused which is so so frustrating. I just need an easy and simple guide so I can do what I need to do.

If there is anyone out there with the time and patience to help me then it would be very much appreciated. I'M using windows xp.

Many many thanks in advance.

Handbrake is an easy to use program that converts stuff to many formats including ipod/iphone for you. You can play with the quality of recordings easily etc.

How is it coping with commercial DVDs? I used to have ripper/downsizer for my PocketPC which worked with most commercial DVDs. Any problems with DRM?

Hi, I used videora as suggested to me. I also downloaded DVD decripter which you need to do. The step by step that they have is very good.
Hope that helps and good luck.

I am just decoding an avi file using handbrake...It's 1.2GB avi file. 40 minutes have passed and it's decoded about 13% and it's showing ETA of 5 hr 13 minutes .... Is that normal!

Don't know how I managed to miss that.

Now, I've downloaded DVDdecrypter as well. I want it to rip my own DVDs for use on the iphone 3GS. I suppose I rip the DVDs at a high quality setting (AVI?) and then use handbrake to convert for the iphone?

You can just rip the DVD's with handbrake without having to use DVDdecrypter. I use DVD43 which is a free program that takes of the disc encryption and then use the Iphone/touch setting in handbrake and save to a folder on my desktop called "Iphone movies", save the file as a m4v file then upload to itunes and set as either a movie (defualt) or tv show via the get info setting.

If your converting tv series into iphone rips and want them all as one big file, try the following:

1. use dvdshrink to turn the disc into several VOB files and save in the same location, e.g. "iphone VOB's"

2. use VOBmerge (google it) freeware to join all the vobs together into one big VOB file and name whatever you want

3. use hanbrake to convert the single big VOB file into a Iphone firnedly m4v file.

The Handbrake website guide to the GUI version for windows says that it won't encrypt commercial DVDs. (just checked there to confirm this)

I must point out that there is dubious legality about using programs like DVD Decrypter to remove copy protection even if the copy is only for your own personal use. I'll leave this thread open but I feel that I do have to point that out to everyone.

Fair comment... Backing up your own discs etc... is a murky world of copyright infringes

Also with regards to handbrake not converting commercial DVD's you could use DVD43 (google it) to legitimally "back up" your own DVD's

Thanks. I'm aware of that, but any such use would be of DVDs I already own, and for my own use only. I doubt that I would keep the copy for more than a few weeks. Not really any worse than copying my own LPs, CDs etc to iPhone for personal use, although I would agree that under the current law the legal position is not the same. Of course, the record/DVD companies would like us to purchase a new copy for each medium. Perhaps I should just dub/edit a few films on TV using one of my DVD recorders, and encrypt them. After all they're not copy protected

Then there is the whole can of worms with Regional Coding of DVDs, blu-ray etc. I wouldn't mind that so much if they ALWAYS released R1 discs in R2 format as well, but ... I'm drifting off-topic.

It's all academic now, anyway, as SWMBO has pointed out that when I used to use my PocketPC for watching videos on holiday, I invariably finished up with backache/neckache/etc after half an hour. So I'll forget the whole thing, just use the video bit for clips of the grandkids to show off to friends, and download some games from the app store. What she actually said was "it was a 9 days wonder last time, and you wasted a lot of time doing it".
She seems to think I ought to talk to her occasionally when we're on holiday - how unreasonable can she get?
