You need to make an appointment online: Apple Retail Store (United Kingdom) - Genius Bar

I had a bit of a struggle getting my 2G replaced (due to an issue on their side that said it was well out of warranty), but I had the two things I needed-an Iphone with a serial number on the back and a receipt with that same serial number showing that it was most definately still in warranty.

They tried the old "Oh what you need to do sir is go away and speak to Applecare, blah blah blah, BS BS BS....", but I simply informed them that "I" didn't need to do anything as I had a receipt proving it was under warranty-end of.

They then relented (the store was full of people waiting) and swapped it straight over.

In fairness, the only other issue I have heard of is warranty being refused on grounds of "Moisture Entry" (the iPhones have very (over?) sensitive detectors apparently), but on the whole it seems to be a good service.

HTH.

They can check if under warranty without receipt. No need to have latest software.
