Third Party Applications on iPhone 3GS

Much to my surprise (NOT) I can't find any information in the User Manual on installing Third Party Applications on the 3GS. (Unless I'm doing that "man thing" and not seeing what's right in front of me)

Can you only do this via the iTunes App Store? I would prefer not to Jailbreak my phone unless I have to. e.g. what would it do to my warranty?

Basically I want to install :

Handbase - available in iTunes App Store, but no indication about whether I could order the bolt-on to enable it to sync with MS Access Databases on my PC. So, in some ways it would be easier to order it direct from DDH software.

Some MS Office compatible software (Must read/edit Excel and Word), and again sync with my PC. QuickOffice seems the best option on in the App Store

Dictionary/Thesaurus with anagram/crossword solver included. Only on App Store seems to be "Wordbook English dictionary and thesaurus"

an ebook reader - of which there are NONE on the App store, although there are a couple of ebooks! I'm considering Stanza or eReader which are available elsewhere.

Any help appreciated

Once you have registered an itunes account you can download in both itunes and directly onto your phone. In order to download apps from your phone press the app store icon, select the app you want and then click the price which will be in a blue rectangle. You will be prompted to enter your email address and password you used to register in itunes. Next time you sync your phone back with itunes you will be prompted to transfer your purchases into itunes. To purchase from itunes, open itunes on the left panel click click itunes store. Then when the pane to the right changes toward the left click app store, select the app you want to purchase and then this will bring up further info on the app simply click get app and again you will be prompted to enter your registration details. The downloaded app can be found by click Applications in the left pane. You can then sync these to your iphone. If you jailbreak cydia (unofficial app store) virtually all apps are free there is an ebook reader. I'm afraid I can't say how good it is as I have never used it. Also if you jailbreak you can always restore the phone back to its original state in itunes, so apple never need know you jailbroke

Big problem with that is that the 3GS is yet to be jailbroken. So for the time being you're stuck with official apps. That said, I think your searches haven't done the App Store justice yet. I would have thought there would be many many apps available doing the functions you require.

And so there are, but the one's I mentioned are those I'll probably get.

Searched the app store long and hard, but couldn't find a ebook reader on it.

I'm obviously suffering from an imagination failure.

I'd search the App Store for "ebook reader", and found sod all. Just searched for Stanza, and lo and behold, there it is.

Old-timer's Disease (medical joke) is obviously finally getting to me.

I've already bought Handbase and Quickoffice, so I'll download Stanza and the thingy to find free wifi hotspots, and then, apart from the dictionary/thesaurus/anagram solver, life will be complete.
