Switching between Wi-Fi and 3G access

When away from home I will have to use 3G internet access, but when at home I can use my wi-fi router to access the internet.

Does the iPhone 3GS automatically use wi-fi if it is available, or do I need to select it manually?

Seems pointless not making use of wi-fi when it is available.

Also, when in locations that offer free wi-fi access, is there anything I need to do to switch over to using their free wi-fi service?

thanks

Re: Switching between Wi-Fi and 3G access

If there is a wifi signal available the 3Gs will automatically switch to it the same as it does from GPRS>Edge>3G.

If you're somewhere that has free wifi (The Cloud/Bt Openzone) the 3Gs will ask you if you want to connect to it. The first time you use each type it will prompt you for your mobile number so it can tell o2 you're using it.

Once connected to your home wifi as long as it is turned on it will automaticlly connect to it. If you have either an iphone contract, payg iphone or wifi bolt on you can get free access to bt openzone and the cloud network, you will have to put your phone number in the first time you use it but from then on it should (as long as your wifi is turned on) connect to it when its available.
Hope that helps.
