Battery Life on the 3gs.

Hi all,

before I have a little moan I went to the apple store MK after making an appointment at the genius bar. I was not happy with the battery life on my wifes 3g, after around 5 minutes I have a nice new shinny one in my hand, geat service.

Anyway to the point, I'm really dissapointed with the battery life on the 3Gs, I would have to say it's no better than the 3g, could even be worse.

How are other users finding the battery life.

Once I have fully charged within a couple of hours the % is around 90 even with very little use, is this normal or should I get this one looked at as well.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I'd say it's probably normal to drop a little. The novelty of mine is wearing off now so I'm playing a little less (it's still amazing but i have managed to put it down for a while) and the battery is going better because of that (about 60-70% after 12 hours). For the first few days I charged it overnight, took it to work and had to charge it again when I got home 9 hrs later (I blame Scramble!). It's been a productive week for me

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

I'm pretty happy with the battery life, I charged mine up last night @ about 1am, left it on all night on standby (3g, location services on) and got 5+ hours use during today, mostly internet browsing over 3g, a couple of games, some YouTube, 30 Minutes of iPod, location services on again. The battery was down to 10% at about 3pm this afternoon.

In all about 13 hours of standby, and 5 hours useage, I've heard the battery gets better after a charges though too.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

Have to agree with the OP - the battery life is surprisingly crap so far. I'm going to try running it down to 10% or so before charging rather than my usual constant "top-up" charging.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

mine seems to be bearing up surprisingly well.
3g,wifi left on to connect as they will. Push /location left on and I reckon when I get home from work including calls and a fair amount of twittering/farceburking and a couple of calls i'm still on about 50%. Thats from 100% overnight. With the 3g I had to turn push off most of the time to get near that..

I think you need to realise that battery life is poor on the iPhone all round.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

I know this is a topic thats been discussed a lot for the 3G,

I appreciate that there is an argument to support "whats the point in having a top of the line phone and the turning off its functions", but if you've no need to use 3G / wifi/ bluetooth etc turn them off it really will help

Use 2G when you dont need to be browsing the web and turn off location settings

Fetch goes off and gets your new e-mail, you tell it how often to check, the less often you check the better your battery life will be.

Exactly right, thats what it means and yes it will use more battery

Applications like IM+ use push to keep you updated with any new instant messages you are sent.

Various applications use your current GPS position in order to work, I keep this turned off to save battery

One last thing is that keeping the brightness level down on the phone can help.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

thanks for that just a couple of more questions

Q1 why does push use more battery ? does it not work in the same way as txt messages i can not understnd how push uses more battery than off and check once an hour for mail can you explain it how it uses more batt thanks.

Q2 The location settings, I know some apps use it like the camera when it asks you when you take a picture but by turning it off will i lose anything like the maps app and the compass using tha google maps ? or is this only for other apps such as the camera and others and it does not effect the maps app? and how does this use the battery up ?

Q3 why does the camera ask about location anyway does it save the picture with some sort of location you took the picture at ?

Q4 so turning push off and checking once an hour will be fine but no other app needs this on unless i get an app that needs it only the emails use it with the apps that are already on the phone ?

Q5 would you save much batt turning push off

thanks

Meridius, can't you edit/delete all your questions to keep this on topic? Considering you have started your own thread for the questions.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

I gave the battery a test today, so i ran music videos on shuffle mode, with a few text messages to reply too, managed 10hrs off video usage before the battery died, which is the official Apple figure for 3GS

I have always been really pleased with my 2G. It will last for around 3-4days.
I do turn off at night though.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

After doing a couple of charge cycles (100-1%) on my 3GS , i am very pleased with the result.
Once you stop using wifi, 3G,Bluetooth and push apps constantly , the battery life is all i need.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

I was experiencing very poor battery life on my 3GS initially, but after performing a restore and setting it up as a new phone (rather than using the backup of my old 3G iPhone) it seems to be bearing up quite a lot better now. Of course this could just be coupled with the fact that I'm mucking around with it a fair bit less than before, but I'm pretty sure that the restore has helped - for example I just checked my phone now and it is still claiming 100% and it has been off charge for almost 4 hours now - before the restore it would start dropping charge a lot sooner (even just sat in standby).

I'm also fairly sure there are some programs (certain games for example) that are particularly brutal on battery life.

If you upgraded from a previous iPhone and used the backup image of the old phone then it might be worth trying a restore and then set up as a new phone to see if that helps (you can resync all your apps, contacts, music etc. just fine - though you will lose message history).

I ran the battery down completely last night so since then a full charge

useage - 2 hours (facebook, texts, couple of calls, web browsing)
standy - 9 hours 37 mins

is that good or bad?

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

Must say I've only had my Iphone just over a day but I'm mega impressed with the battery life.

It's on par with my Nokia E71, I did have this quite customised though with a few apps etc, used wifi, bluetooth, gps etc

Here is my rough Iphone use:

Push e-mail set to once an hour, I just go in and check if I need too.

Good mix of web surfing both wireless and umts (3g) couple of hours worth at least on and off

Around an hour or 2 listening to music on the ipod

Generally playing

Bluetooth set on for around 1.5 hour car journey with a couple of 5 minute phone calls made

texting etc

playing with apps

Wifi disabled when not in used, likewise so is location services. I will only use when I need too, bluetooth is also disabled when not in use.

I charged a little bit this morning but there is still 2/3rds of the battery left. Very impressed and not the horror story I was expecting.

Re: Battery Life on the 3gs.

The first day I had my 3GS, I was pretty shocked at how poor the battery life seemed to be.

However, it seems to have improved quite a bit since then. It's not quite as good as my 2G was, but it's not far behind. It seems the battery needs to 'run in' a bit.
