Iphone 3G without sim automatically closes apps..is this normal?

Iphone 3G without sim automatically closes apps..is this normal?
As soon as i open an app, the phone automatically closes them and i end up back at the home screen - is a sim necessary for apps to work?

Just checked my phone mate and all the apps still work without the sim card.

hmm, newly downloaded apps work but existing ones close oh well im selling it anyway lol..thanks
