What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

It seems to me, that if you buy an iPod Touch, along with a Samsung Omnia HD, W995, N97, HTC Magic, you will have two great products, instead of just the one (i.e iPhone 3GS).

I am currently going round in circles because of this.

My 30gb video iPod is corrupt and my current o2 contract is now up.

I love the look of the iPhone, as well as having an all-in-one device - and the apps are a MAJOR draw for me.

However, when I think about an iPhone:

iPhone 3GS = £275 and £35 per month for 18 months

When I could get:

iPod Touch 32gb £280
Samsung Omnia HD Free on a £35 per month, 18 month deal

I could find similar deals for the HTC Touch, W995 and N97 (a little trickier admittedly).

Everytime I think I have made the decision, one way or the other, I change my mind again.

The biggest advantage of the iPhone is that it's all-in-one, it has the apps, voice recognition (when you don't know a song), as well as being able to download a song wherever you are from the iTunes store.

What I really want to know is, what made YOU go for the iPhone, ahead of the aforementioned iPod Touch/other mobile option?

Hopefully this will make it easier for me to decide!

Thanks

Two of my favourite gadgets in one, it was just ideal IMO.

How big are your pockets to be carrying around two devices when one will do all the jobs you want?

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

i like having one device. I bought the 2G iPhone when they went to £169.99 which was cheaper than the touch at the time. IMHO the iPhone really does tick all the boxes as a multi media smart phone.

What do you mean by pushed? With the Samsung Omnia HD, you can access email anytime too, right? I am sure we're probably talking about two different things though

Oh yeah, and the all-in-one-ness is one of the major draws for me. If you think about it though - the Omnia HD has an 8mp camera, as well as 720p video recording - so it does offer something over and above the iPod. Also, you could sell the Omnia and get a few hundred quid, use your old phone and still have the iPod Touch (if you chose to do so).

To a degree I am playing Devil's Advocate because I do want just the one device in my pocket... BUT my money-hat (and 720p video recording nudge) are telling me that I should be more shrewd.

Still stuck....

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

Well if you want to be more shrewd, get a 2nd 3G for about £250-£300 and then get the O2 Simplicity SIM deal for £19.58/month which gives you 600mins/1200txts and unlimited internet.

Do a search on here, loads of people are going down that route to save £15/month against the iPhone contract, I have.

Only things you don't get on Simplicity compared the proper iPhone contract are BT/Cloud wi-fi and Visual Voicemail.

My crystal ball tells me that you'll spend more time playing with the iPod Touch as you love the apps and the interface... which will make you wish you had an iPhone

You'll also wish you could use some of those oh-so-handy apps on your phone as they would come in so handy but, alas, you cannot....

Exactly. Everyone I know who has bought an iPod Touch has ended up getting an iPhone.

I have always gone for a phone with a high spec camera, and then touch screen phones were born, so i went for the u990 which at the time i thought was ok, that led to the renoir which i got. I tried the black berry with the squidgy touch screen a mate had the tocco, then my son got the ipod touch ....WOW.... even better he got it jail broken, amazing. So that was it even though i was mid contract wth the renoir i was deffo getting the 3gs on iphone friday and the rest is history, the only phone i will be getting next is the next iphone!!! hope this helps

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

So I had a Nokia N71 and iPod Touch and the faffing about was just too much to be doing with (even using JoukiSpot).

I sold them and got an iPhone PAYG, then just used the o2 contract SIM from the N71 (on a retention deal).

None of the supposed 'better' features of the N71 were important to me, compared to the 'must have' iPhone apps and ease of use.

NB That said, the company supplied crackberry is also always with me, just for e-mail as the thumb-keyboard is gazillion times easier to use than the touch-screen keyboard on the iPhone. Hmm, maybe a Palm Pre is my ideal device?

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

I bought mine to reduce my portable gadget count (Pocket PC/Ipod/Phone)

However, I still carry my compact digital camera - proper zoom/flash/higher resolution.

I still have to purchase the 3rd party apps I need, but that can wait until I get fully to grips with the new toy.

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

I've got the N95 8gig and a ipod touch bought for me for Christmas from the wife. I feel guilty as i've just ordered a iphone because i love the touch and couldn't do with carrying 2 devices around. I'm holding onto the N95 just in case the Iphone doesn't cut it as a phone or i miss the camera.

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

For me the only flaws with the iPhone compared to other phones are (a) the shorter battery life and (b) the inferior camera.

But the last phone I had was an SEC905 with 8.1 megapixels, a flash and I think a Zeiss lens, and the pictures were still not as good as my old Ixus - mostly because ALL phone cameras lag between button and shutter, and good shots are often a matter of good timing.

So like the other poster said, if I were going to carry around two gadgets, I'd carry my iPhone and and a decent compact camera.

iPod Touch 2g: 533 MHz
iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz

Plus I think there are increases in ARM CPU technology through the range.

Also, memory no doubt helps:

iPod Touch 1g: 128MB
iPhone 3G : 128MB
iPod Touch 2g: 128MB
iPhone 3GS: 256MB

Their respective Wiki pages can tell you more!

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

Well,

I have a 1st Gen iPod Touch - 16gb. I've almost filled that, so was looking at 2nd Gen touch.

My O2 contract is up, so I'm moving to simplicity and picking up a 32gb 3GS. This way I can have a new phone and iPod in one transaction.

I will spend a big lump upfront - but half for the iPod price and half for the phone - it all works out cheaper as i'm on a lower priced tariff, so saving more £'s PM and no legthy contract!

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

The only thing i will do
and really hope apple will do is update the hardware with GPS,

i can sort of see this happening mainly cause of the GPS software which has come out and is coming out on the iPhone,

i use my 2G touch strictly for music and videos
the only apps on it are Music and Video Related.......

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

Never really a big fan of gimmicky phones, I was content with an half decent ericsson before. That was until my bro bought a 3G

Bought my first ever Apple product (iphone 3G) in Feb this year. Sold that last Thursday and it felt like I lost a limb.
That was until the day after on release of the 3GS,

Hate to admit it but I'm now in danger of becoming an Apple fan boy. Even looking at new Mac Book Pro

Re: What made you choose an iPhone ahead of iPod Touch and another phone?

I bought an iPod Touch last February and bought my Iphone 3GS last Friday - I spent 15 months wishing I had all that functionality on my phone, now I do. There's no going back after an iPhone - yesterday I thought it was broken (hey, nobody told me the right speaker is actually the mic - oops!) and the thought of being without it for a week or two was horrible!
