Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I JB'd my iPhone last night, its running OS 3.0

So I thought about all the stuff that people seem to rave on about and tried it out.

Firstly I tried to down load a theme, simple enough

So secondly I decided to download ispazio dock flow, this took about 2 hours to sort out as no matter what way I installed the theme or the dockflow it just kept displaying in an odd kind of half and half way. Lord only knows how I fixed it but I did..... im already bored of it now though

So next I downloaded iBluetooth but no matter what i did i wasnt able to send or recieve any files from my N73 and for some strange reason it decided I needed 2 bluetooth icons, so Ive removed that now too

On to Video, I searched Cydia for a video app and sucsessfully installed it. Of course it doesnt open when you select it but I did have a nice icon on the screen, till i removed that as well.

Bite SMS seems a little pointless since you have to pay for a licence and now with OS 3.0 fixing the biggest bug of all (landscape keyboard) it seems even more pointless

So what am I missing out on, what really does work well and is worth JB'ing the phone for?

Thanks

Steve

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

Well you've to remember the new firmware has only just come out, you'll have to give it a couple of weeks or so to allow the developers to update their apps etc tbh.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I jailbroke few days ago, and i'm kind of thinking the same.

Yes my iPhone looks different now, but how long to i actually spend just looking at it?

I can recored video, but cannot MMS it to anyone.

I do like having icons 5 across instead of 4, but its hardly a biggy, and i now have the battery %.

I am kind of thinking of going back.

So i'm interested in what peopel say too.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

To be honest, the majority of people i know don't JB to install 3rd party apps - as there aren't really many decent ones about.

There's the odd one or two 3rd party apps that come in handy, like Backgrounder (although i'm not sure if thats been updated to 3.0 yet).

I only Jailbroke mine so that i could unlock. I very rarely even look at Cydia anymore.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

Although I always JB my phone I dont go into it too deeply. I just change the theme, txt/email alert sounds and 5 icon dock.Oh and I dont use App Store,iTunes or Stocks so I hide the icons.

Whilst I could live quite happily with a standard iPhone , JBing takes 5 minutes and doesnt alter the performance so I always JB as soon as I can.

I personally have never had a problem with Cycorder but it uses parts of the memory which should be kept for other processes which can cause problems. I would imagine its nothing a quick turn off and on wouldnt solve if you ever did have an issue.

It certainly wouldnt stop me using it, that is a "must have" app as far as im concerned.

iSpazio took all of a second to get working

iBlue tooth doesn't work with 3.0 ATM

Never had a problem with Cycorder

biteSMS offers a lot more than landscape keyboard. It lets you use smilies
that work on most phones (unlike apples own emoji) and then there is the quick reply and quick compose.

SBsettings gives you many setting at you finger tips instead of having to delve into the menu. You can switch wifi on and off, 3G and Edge on and off, quick notes. See what processes are in the background and kill them if you are not using them. You can adjust brightness, have a calculator. Turn flight mode on and off. Location servises ona d and off and your blue tooth.

asBattery adds the battery percentage toggle in the usage menu.

asVibra2 for 3.0 ads 3 vibrates to and text email and the like, rather than the weedy one that is the default.

Talking Alerts adds a nice email, sms mms alert.

You can change the colour of the font on your home screen (I changed It to red )

There are others that don't work with 3.0 ATM.

5 row QWERTY keyboard which adds a row of symbols and numbers to the top.

Weather icon which displays a live weather feed to the icon and temp plus image of weather to the status bar.

Font swap that let you change the font for the whole system. (I miss Neo font).

So there is plenty jailbreaking can do and more .

+1 here for bitesms... great app, worth the money and a million times better than apples own message service.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I've just discovered Intelliscreen and Intellidial. Still on my trial but I'll be paying for both of them when that expires. Staggering that Apple don't have the functionality of either already in place. SBSettings is very handy.

I do find that a 3G when jailbroken is more sluggish than not but the enhanced lockscreen I get more than makes up for that.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I use JB for:

MXtube - download youtube vids instead of a reliance for streaming
Ultrasn0w - nuff said
SBSettings
BiteSMS
Intelliscreen
OPENSSH
Winterboard
5 Icon Dock
Cycorder
Cydia Flashlight (brighter than AppStore + Strobe)
VoipOver (for Skype chat)
iBlank
Categoires
Un-Unlockable (to keep pesky non-iphoners out )
NES emulator plus some other games

2G-er will need Swirly for MMS

Apart from that not much at all. You're just not looking thru Cydia enough

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

Let's try and keep specific app discussion to the Cydia thread and generic 'what's the benefit' chat here please.

To answer the original point though... I only think it's worth jailbreaking if there is something specific you cannot do that you want. I feel that once you start messing around for the sake of it, just because you can, you risk running into problems and instability.

But sometimes there are things you wish you could do that only jailbreaking will allow. For me, it's the reflective 5-icon dock and the ability to set wallpapers behind the springboard. I'm quite happy with everything else

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

Not too sure if this is the correct place to post this question but here it is anyway. I'm an iphone newbie but I've just remembered that a 2nd hand imac that I bought for my wife (a few months ago) had a folder with loads of iphone apps on in it (.zip files) – about 50 (mostly games). Is there anyway I can get them onto my phone without having to jail break it? i.e. can I unzip them and drag them into the iphone apps space in itunes and then hit sync?

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I JB'd for 2 reasons :

BiteSMS + SBSettings.

And those reasons are all you need to do it. I mean, its free to JB (OK BiteSMS will copst you), but it is very litle expenditure for what you get.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

I think jailbreaking is incredibly overrated. Yeah there's some cool features but I could quite easily live without it.

That said it takes all of 5minutes and doesn't remove anything from the phone so you might as well do it and at least have the option of being able to use certain apps.

Re: Am I missing the point with Jail Breaking

Hmm, I always said I wouldn't bother to jailbreak my phone, always worried it would mess it up or something but reading this and reading other threads im seriously tempted to do it now.

Just a few things that hopefully the more knowledgeable people can answer please...

1. Is it completely safe? I dont want to mess my phone up.. Can I just restore if all goes wrong?

2. I mainly only want the 5 icon dock, themes, video recorder and the weather at the top.. can someone point me to where I get these apps?

3. The big question, ive googled but seem to get different ways of jailbreaking, can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial to the best way to jailbreak a 3G running os 3.

Thanks alot!
