Hi All

I have just purchased my 3GS iPhone and i have setup my AOL email.

But i get this message when trying to send emails.

Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.aol.com" failed
Additional Outgoing Mail Servers can be configured in settings>mail,Contacts and Calanders

I have looked on the AOl website and the setting seem to be right. Can any one help.

When i set it up i just used the aol settings already on the iphone

this will answer your question.

iPhone and iPod touch email settings for common Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United Kingdom

but basically whatever account you setup you will have to use o2's SMTP server (if you are with them) and you have to use your o2 username and password to authenticate on it.

All the settings and necessary information is on that page though

I dont use the o2 smtp server for either my Blueyonder or Googlemail accounts on my iPhone.Works fine.

i expect thats down to those ISP's using SMTP authentication. gmail certainly as it works fine on mine.

try this
Setting should be in iphone settings/mail,contacts etc/add account or edit existing account settings:

ACCOUNT = ON
Name =YOUR NAME JOE BLOGGS (not email addresS this will GIVE errors)
ADDRESS = YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS (****@aol.com)
PASSWORD= WHATEVER IT IS ON AOL ON YOUR PC/MAC AOL SIGN IN
DESCRIPTION= SHOULD SHOW UP AS YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS

checking these settings i found i had put my email addy in the name field and i couldnt send or receive ... kept getting stmp errors and sender address invalid and other groans...

Just to confirm that I had to change my outgoing mail server to smtp.02.co.uk for me to be able to send emails. I'm with AOL.
