Thumbs down i fear my iPhone 3GS has died....in water

Hi,

Well, I'm sad to say that after a trip down the loo, my dear 6 day old iPhone is still failing to work. Here's what happened - i guess i am after good news stories and ANY tips AT ALL!!! So, i bought the iPhone on Friday (launch day in the UK) and by Monday lunchtime it had fallen out of my jeans pocket and down the loo (I know, I know...).
Anyway, it seemed to be OK ish after being dried under a hand dryer - I managed to make a call and send a text - have since read of course that i should have switched it off immediately but i didn't. Anyway my husband called & told me to switch it off immediately but it had been still on for about two hours by then. The screen flashed on and off and the home key stopped working about an hour after it had been dropped down the loo. I got home & put it in the airing cupboard and left it there overnight. Next day i tried it and it did come on but home key still not working. Back to airing cupboard. Next day tried it again but this time it was worse! Battery dead, but no surprise there, plugged it in and the apple logo appeared. I then got a msg saying emergency calls only - and i had to use the slide which was fine. Eventually got a message saying i need to restore via iTunes, so plugged in to my mac - but iTunes won't recognise it at all. Have tried it with SIM in and out - no different. It has now been in the airing cupboard for around 60 hours - and in a bag of rice in there for 24 - still no joy. Any other tips pleeeeease?

I am thinking of going to the store i bought it from in Kingston on Friday and just fessing up - but the water sensor is half white half red - i checked with a torch. I have read that there is also a sensor at the bottom of the iPhone but i can't see any sign of red there - i can't even see the sensor!

What do you reckon my chances of them taking pity on me are? I mean i know i don't deserve it but...well, if you have an iPhone you will know how i am feeling right now!

Any help very very much appreciated!!
Thanks
Kate.

If its from the Apple Store , as they will look at the water sensor and most likely take it apart. I doubt very much that they will give you a new one, as soon as you say water damaged they will show you the door, I am assuming you dont have insurance ?

if you bought it from an o2 store oe carfonewarehouse you might be able blag it and say it just stopped working .

I tried that in a o2 shop
they sent it away came back saying water damage
offrered a repair at £140 , the indicators don't even have to
be red just pink and the warranty is void
worth a try maybe

Could always speak to your home contents insurer to see if it's covered for accidental damage?

Also did you pay with a credit card? It could be covered under the credit card...but I could be wrong.

I hope you get it sorted anyway.

Are you covered on your house insurance??? The funny thing is I did the same thing last week, I stuck it wrapped in a towel down the side of a radiator over night and it still works. That's really bad luck though after only a few days of having the phone. Hope you get it sorted.

as far as the restore in itunes goes - stick your phone into DFU mode and then connect and hopefully you can restore that way. That doesnt get around the water damage though - i can only echo whats been said above about home insurance etc.....

I dropped my iphone in water not long ago and managed to get a replacement from carphonewarehouse. Everything on my phone worked fine except the earpiece so took it in and they said yep its faulty and went to the back and got me a brand new one

They didnt check for any water damage, just checked the earpiece and thats it! result

Re: i fear my iPhone 3GS has died....in water

i would take it back and say its not working too well after a week to cpw and see what they say, i was gonna advice ringing up o2 and inquring about the insurance or cpw but im sure they only cover u when your sim card is in the phone, bare in mind o2 will log when your sim is in the phone and as its not been in the phone as its not working it could look strange! insurance would ya best bet with geek squad then trying to claim 3 months from now!

Re: i fear my iPhone 3GS has died....in water

i would cut my loss and sell it now while the market is still good,
then with the money made,
add abit more and buy a new one,
this will still cost less then getting it repaired,

long as the phone switches on you should make close to £400....
