Well if you decide to go for a new contract running alongside your original one then I guess you would go through the usual sign-up process including the credit check. Though as you are an existing customer I wouldn't expect you would have any problems unless you've had payment issue's with o2 in the past.

cheers!

can't justify the outlay, currently on a 2 month old 18 month contract@£15 per month, then to get a 2nd one would be another £45, that's insanity! I'll just save and get one on PAYG instead

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Do any of the early iPhone adopters remember how long it was before a price cut was applied to the phone (if indeed one was)?

I ummed and erred over whether to go for the original iPhone when I last swapped phones knocking on for 2 years ago but ultimately went for an O2-branded HTC TyTN II.

I've now got the itch for a new phone and figure I might as well go for a 3G S as a used 3G (whjch was the original plan) , but I'm midway through an 18 month O2 contract and am not too keen on shelling out £440 for a PAYG 3G S.

So, just wondered what prospect there is (if any) of a price cut in the next 6-9 months. I may just wait and either try to get one at upgrade time or hang on for a PAYG price cut.

Ta!

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

As some of you know, I got my 16GB PAYG 3G S on Friday, and didnt really fall in love with it the crappy bluetooth being one reason, so I put it on ebay and sold it at about £5 profit (I didnt want to extortion money from people) and now im regretting it. After putting it on ebay I just wanted to play with it and I couldnt. Im sure I can survive without the jailbreak for a while and a week until my unlimited data kicks in on my pay monthly contract.

So after work today Im going to run round to my local Apple store and get another one hopefully in white if they have some left.

My bank will be thinking ive gone on a spending spree!!!

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Could anyone who has upgraded from a 3G to 3GS advise if I am correct about the process for doing it?

I have a 16Gb 3G purchased on launch day last year (18 month contract @ £35 per month)

The way I see it, the cheapest way for me to get a 32Gb 3GS is to get one on the 18 month contract @ £44 per month. This would mean I would pay £175 for the phone, and I would pay £210 to pay off my existing contract.

Assuming I get £260 for my current phone, that would be a base cost to upgrade of £125.

However, I would also need to pay an extra £9 per month for a contract I don't really need. Does anyone know if I can downgrade to the £35 per month contract after 9 months as with the old contracts?

That means a total cost of £206 if I can downgrade or £287 if not.

Seems quite a lot of money, am I missing something?

The inital push was a pre-xmas publicity thing. The headline price dropped but the contract prices stayed the same. It wasn't until the new one was in the pipline that the bigger reductions came in and O2 tried to clear out the old stock.

That is exactly how i priced it up. I can't justify it for the gain - plus knowing i'll probably be in the same position next year when 3G S II comes out.

Like you my contract is up in January and i'll probably go sim-only especially if the rumours for a new phone are about.

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Sell the 3G, buy a 3GS PAYG and keep your current contract until it ends?

Then look at alternative talk/txt/net plans such as the Simplicity when your contract is up? Cheaper long term, plus you're not in another 18 month contract for when iPhone mk4 comes out next June! (when=if, but probably!)

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

I can't understand why so many people are considering paying off their contracts in order to start a new one and get a 3Gs, it makes no financial sense.

Say like the above example you pay £210 to pay off your contract, then pay £175 for the initial payment for a 3Gs on a new contract, that's £385 you pay out (minus whatever you get for your existing 3G). You'll then be stuck in another 18 month contract at an over inflated price, and next year if a new iPhone is released you'll have the same headache.

It makes much more sense to just buy a PAYG 3Gs at £440, sure it's initially £55 more than the above method but you save LOADS more in the long run by not having that expensive contract and this time next year will be contract free.

Don't give o2 any free money!!

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

I do agree with the previous statement.

I'm looking to do the same, sell my 16gb 3g, buy a 32gb 3gs, and keep it (as I have this one) in good condition.

o2 will offer me a reduced tariff (or even stay pay and go), then sell the 32gb and get the next incarnation and probably pay and go that one too

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Absolutely bloody typical is'nt it? Day off work, got my PAC code, and all three of the O2 shops near me had NONE of the one I want in stock!!!

God damn it! At least I'm on hol for 6 day's from Wed so I hope they get them in on Thurs? I was looking forward to playing Real Racing too.

Any idea when Carphone Warehouse will be stocking PAYG?? They are still not in the website so I'm guessing it won't be any time soon?

Totally agree with the above and that is exactly what I did. Got £300 for my totally babied 3G and got myself a 32gb on friday and just stuck my original sim in. So I got my new top nacker phone for less than you can on 18month contract and will be out of 02's clutches in the new year.

Good to see you took all the good advice you were given at the weekend

I TOLD you that you should play about with it for a while before you ditch it...would you say you were a little indecisive?

I am just riling you of course; well done for jumping back on the iPhone bandwagon I'm still waiting from my new 3GS to come from Apple; wonder if it will have a yellow screen

Ouch. I'll chase them down to the ends of the earth with the Find my iPhone feature....until they reset the phone which switches off the feature of course.

Sorry but my sick twisted sense of humour found that pretty hilarious! On a side note, just think what other phones cost the same? It's pretty good value on PAYG if you compare it to a unlocked sim free phone. HTC Magic was being sold for £440 from Phones4U to use on a non Vodafone network.

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Just been thinking of my options tonight to put an order in for a 32Gb Black, had a good look through this thread.

Still a bit confused as a way to go

I have no problem buying the unit outright, but cannot see which tariff would be best.

PAYG or Simplicity.

I see I could get 600mins talk and 1200 texts for £19.58 on PAYG. There is a Bolt on I can include FREE, so what is the difference between 'unlimited web' and 'Wifi?. I thought the unit can pick up Wifi anyway and you can surf also the web.

Also Simplicity can work out at around £10 a month I have read but I cannot find the inclusive web without a £30 top up.

Basically 600 mins is more than enough for me, I don't want to be tied to a contract and I like the idea of FREE local landline calls also. But want web surfing wifi FREE also.

Sorry guys, but anyone got something similar above and from where, do I get the iPhone directly from Apple or do the whole deal through CPW or O2.

Cheers

Nick

Re: iPhone 3GS O2 contract and PAYG discussion Part II

Wifi access in your own house where you pay for broadband will work fine, and not cost you any more. The wifi people are talking about is those available in coffee shops, McDonalds etc, so things like BT Openzone, The Cloud...access to "public" wifi is dependent on a subscription or other means of signing in; hence the difference between the tariffs. The Bolt On you get free on the £20 tariff allows you browsing etc over the 3G mobile phone network.

If you want to get it cheapest, order online through Quidco at the Apple Store. If you want it fast go to a store (O2).

Just ordered my Pay&GO black 32gb 3GS from 02. It was the only model they had left in stock, so it was lucky that was the one I wanted!

I already have BT Broadband, and as far as I know that already includes BTOpenzone, so why would I want to pay for it again unless I really want to access it via 3G? The great majority of the time when I want to access the internet I do it via my own or relative/friend's home wifi access.

The difference between web and wifi is that the if you choose web you can access the web via iPhone with no wifi coverage via the 3G service.

You can still use wifi - but this service bolt-on provides you access to subscription services like BT Openzone and The cloud which you find in a lot of public places.

Bare in mind that the inclusive mins will cover all mobile and local landline calls anyway. I'm also sure that there is a £15 tariff with less mins and texts and a bolt-on included.

My opinion is get your sim through O2 and choose the web bolt-on, not the wifi, get the phone through quidco with 4% cashback from apple store!

We all have different uses for the iPhone - but I'm sure this is possibly one the biggest features....web anywhere (subject to coverage)?
