dead iphone, no problem come see us in 3 days time....

*Rant alert..*

What a great week for my Apple collection. My apple bluetooth headset stopped charging at all last week, then my iPhone 3g (Nov 08) died yesterday.

Ordinarily no biggie, last time it died I just took it back to O2 shop and was sent away for 3 weeks and came back. Sadly this time they just told me to go to the Apple Store as it was probably something "software" related....

Anyway this time it had some pictures of my newborn daughter on it which I quite wanted to save. So I took my phone over to the Apple Store in Milton Keynes straight away.

As usual lots of short wearing cool people hanging about (I counted 4 "concierges" stood about chatting to each other). I loitered by the Genius bar for 10 minutes before anyone deemed to speak to me.

Sorry we're fully booked for "Genius" appointments today, he told me, but if I went onto the website I could book something for Sunday as they are also full tomorrow and Saturday....

What about the pictures and the fact I have no phone I asked.... sorry nothing we can do, you have to book an appointment if something breaks.

How the **** am I supposed to know when things are about to break ????

GENIUS

So no phone, no pictures, no headset and no-one in the Apple store who gives a toss. Customer Service brilliance.

*Rant Over*

Re: dead iphone, no problem come see us in 3 days time....

So no 3 week wait then? Face it, the company you contracted with, O2, couldn't be bothered and fobbed you off to Apple.

Genius appts are usually over a week at my local and frequently can't be booked at all as they are fully subscribed.

Congrats on the little 'un! Honestly I wouldn't trust such photos to anything but a memory card and the camera on the 1G/2G iPhone is pretty crap by all accounts.

Here's to no sleep for the next 6 months

true. iPhone Browser is a free program that will let you pull stuff off your iphone with very little risk. That's if your iPhone shows up when you plug it in.

Don't blame you for not wanting to hand it to O2 for repair if it's got important photos on it. They'd probably lose it for a month or two before returning it still broken and minus the photos.

Though I can't report direct experience with O2 the OP has had a successful repair via them before.

Re: dead iphone, no problem come see us in 3 days time....

Two thing would have helped in this situation.
a) ProCare membership
b) A nice polite chat with the manager about your issue - always works for me.

I once had a little grumble about a £25 item I'd bought over 12 months earlier, and it yielded a 10% card. Which I'll probably spend on a new macbook pro!

Yep!

Always great service from Shirian and Gary's team

That said, when you work in the service industry, its a blessing when you don't have someone go into meltdown on you everyday!!!

I dunno, I paid £200 for the phone and £35 a month contract and it'll be next Tuesday before I can even talk to them about what to do. So a week with no phone. Normal ? Not in my experience with Nokia & O2 or Blackberry and Voda.

And then there's the 2 * 30 minutes on hold for Apple Care 0870 876 0753 with no answer....

To be fair on O2 last time they got it turned around quickly but they told me this time I should take it to Apple as it has now had a second fault.

The fault is that it powers on, then freezes either with apple logo, recovery logo, welcome screen (with the "swipe to unlock" frozen), also randomly reboots.
To try and fix it I have recovered it about 10 times using 2.3 recovery, tried upgraded to 3.0 on both PC and Mac but nothing. Luckily I managed to pull my photos off the recovery I did yesterday in the 2 minutes it was on before it rebooted.

Bah! knew I should have bought that Google Phone or stuck with the Blackberry

You contracted with O2 didn't you? Its their responsibility, they sell you the hardware and the airtime. 02 could swap this out for you if they wanted to. Railing against a 3 day wait to see a Genius is futile you've already said the last O2 repair was three weeks.

Re: dead iphone, no problem come see us in 3 days time....

have you updated to itunes 8.02???

try this, next time it freezes on the apple logo,
hold down the home button,
and then plug the phone to the usb cable,
dont let go of the home button,

itunes will see it in recovery and recover for you....

Tried recovery in 8.02 / 8.2 and with firmware 2.3 and 3.0. No joy.

Clearly not an Apple issue then. Maybe they could have told me that in the shop rather than just telling me to go home and book an appointment on the web. That's my issue - the clear lack of interest on the part of the Apple Store.

O2 dont swap out, they send it away for repair to Apple approved repairers. As this is the 2nd fault with the phone they refer it back to the manufacturer, namely APPLE.

Anyway I think this discussion has seen its course, so could a mod please close.
Thanks

Re: dead iphone, no problem come see us in 3 days time....

even though you have bought it from 02 there clearly say to take it to apple for repairs,
so that is where everyone take it,
even 02 will have to send it into apple for repairs,
by taking it direct to apple you are removing the middle guy(02),
so quicker turn around,

try doing a restore from a different computer....
