Because it is a drain on the service other people receive. Unfortunately those likely to try this are the same people who wouldn't think twice about inconveniencing others.

Re: o2 will disconnect those who tether without a plan....

why Good? surley if you pay for an unlimited net usage contract then thats exactly what it should be! I can understand if you breach a 'fair usage policy' - but for the odd bit of data here and there why not allow it at no extra cost.... as they do for many other o2 phones? The reason is because o2 have us by the balls and as iphone users were ripped off beyond all belief.

theres a comment on that article thats worth noting:

Quote:
If O2 priced the tethering "bolt-on" reasonably then this wouldn't be an issue... but they're charging for data which surely is already included in an "unlimited" tariff.

I know a number of people have already complained to Ofcom about this and they've made it clear if more people complain they may take action.

Are you an affected O2 customer ? Call Ofcom on 0300 123 3333 and tell them you're not happy with this and that you believe this to be an unfair charge

Finally, to those of you going down the 'unofficial' tethering route - use a VPN service and keep the traffic low, O2 will not be able to distinguish between that and your iPhone's "own" traffic.
Personally - i have no use what-so-ever for tethering as all of my pc's have a paid connection anyway, but i still oppose being charged for a service simply because im using it on an iphone instead of an N95!

Have wondered this myself, I presume it would know via the simple fact it's connected to a laptop and is tethering not 'activated' when you decide to use the functionality? If so, I imagine this will inform 02 at that point.

Forgive my ignorance if incorrect

Re: o2 will disconnect those who tether without a plan....

sounds like an empty threat to discourage people imo, going to be very difficult for them to notice you are doing it, maybe it's not even possible. Then comes the contract they aren't going to be able to disconnect you and keep chargeing you and they arn't going to want to cancel the contract as they need it to pay for the subsidised phone. I'd have thought the first course of action if they did find out you were doing this would be to ask you to stop and nothing else.

Personally I have no interest in tethering but would have no quarms or worrys about doing it if I did.

First of all - you think it's going to slow the network down?

Secondly, nobody in their right mind is going to be downloading movies. For most, tethering is a great way to not be inconvenienced by the iPhone's small screen. I hardly think that people would use it instead of a dedicated bb connection at home!

Third. If you own an XDA internet tethering is no charge. Amazing how all those users haven't drained the service eh?

Open your eyes. o2 are having us over because they know they can get away with it.

I can understand that point - but isnt that what fair usage policy's are for?

As i say i have no use for this at all - but i think its beyond a joke when your charged for using a service that would be free on another handset.... how is that fair? If you want to charge for tethering - fine.... but do it across the whole o2 range and not just the iphone.

One rule for one and all that.....

It's no more of a drain than simply using the phone to do the same task. The fact they will allow you to do it for £15 and for free on other handsets shows it's not about protecting other consumers. Anyway if your network can't handle people using unlimited data they have paid for then take on less customers or improve your network.

Re: o2 will disconnect those who tether without a plan....

do you not mind being ripped off simply because your using an iphone then? regardless of the fact that you may not use the service the principal still stands.

You wouldnt accept it if your neighbour could drive down a street in a corsa and not get charged yet you were charged £15 per month for the right to drive your mini down would you? Its the same thing with this - how on earth can o2 justify this? and more importantly - how can any iphone user be ok with this?

Tethering isn't going to be illegal either now is it? Apple have tried to argue that jailbreaking is illegal too at least in the US, trying to make out that its copyright infringement.

Not sure if thats a proper question or not.

So its ok to modify the phone so you can run unsigned code on the device when this is against the terms and conditions of using the device? But on the other hand its not ok to change some settings or whatever to enable tethering?

indeed its a foolish comparison especially when apple actually filed with the American Copy right office this year insisting jailing breaking is illegal. I'm not sure what happened, hopefully they lost because they were talking nonsence.

completley understandable - IF XDA, N95 etc users were made to pay foir the service.... but complete rubbish when iphone users are charged - simply because o2 have a monopoly over us.

But you've already paid them!!!! That's the argument!

You pay them for "unlimited internet" with a fair usage policy in place.

It's exactly the same "bolt-on" that N95/96 and XDA customers pay for. But o2 let them tether at no additional charge.

And that's the rub!

Re: o2 will disconnect those who tether without a plan....

i dont see anything wrong if someone jailbreak there iphone,
most of us have to jailbreak so we can use another network provider with the iphone,
Apple suck for not selling unlock phones on PAYG,
or even giving a option to unlock them....

when you spend half a grand on a PAYG there should let you unlock it if you wish....

does the principal not apply to both? In both cases your using modified firmware to enable the phone to do something its not meant to do.

You pay them for "unlimited internet" with a fair usage policy in place.

It's exactly the same "bolt-on" that N95/96 and XDA customers pay for. But o2 let them tether at no additional charge.

And that's the rub!
