Based on play.com's markup from the Italian 3G prices, I would expect the play.com 3GS iPhones to go for somewhere in the region of £650 for 16GB and £730 for 32GB.

These are the Italian (unlocked) prices:

Unlocked 32G 3GS is €699 (£590) with free delivery on the Apple online store (Italy). Find an Italian friend and save 40% on the Play price.

That's only £50 or so more than the O2 locked PAYG price. Now that Virgin is 30p a day for internet, I'll be going back to my ancient £0 a month Virgin "contract" on an Italian 3GS when my O2 iPhone contract expires. 19 days out of 20 I'm a light to non-user (all WiFi) and 1 day I actually want a cellular data service.

However Virgin's "fair use" is scary: first 25MB each day 30p; next 25MB £50. (How can that be legal?)

I`m lost for words.

In fact the stupider and stupider these prices get, the more i`m swinging back towards Nokia. Sort it out Apple/O2/Play you`re having a laugh

All that money just so someone can put a simcard of there choice in the phone?! I paid to get my LG chocolate unlocked a few years ago and it was with a grudge as it was a tenner!

Some people just have to much money.

A bit unfair on apple, it's play that are marking them up to a grand not them, yeah it's not cheap from apple, but it's half what play are asking (for a locked one though).

But yeah, who's mad enough to pay £999!

OK, here's one hypothetical reason for blowing stupid money on an unlocked phone (albeit perhaps not Play.com's prices if it works out hundreds of pounds cheaper to fly to Italy and buy from an Apple Store there!) - I'm potentially spending several weeks working abroad in the coming 12 months, and judging by O2's £6-per-Mb outside-EU data rates, I could easily spend more in data charges in a month than the combined cost of an unlocked phone and an appropriate Pay As You Go SIM for whichever country I'm in.

However, does anyone know if it would be as simple as just buying a SIM card in each country and being instantly able to use it, or would I have to phone up local call centres and register (tricky without a local residence) and/or manually input loads of settings into the phone for each new SIM provider?
