Question iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

Seems daft they are charging you for using the o2 data network when it is already supplied in your contract, so how does tethering differ form using the iphone when browsing the net, don't they connect to the same APN?

I use my sim in my laptop as it has a modem well technically I can make phone calls to as it is voice enabled so no breach of o2 T & C, unless someone wants to have a long convo on what a phone actually is.

Anyway to cut it short I don't get charged as am using the same APN as my phone, so on iphone tethering how do they know your using it?

I don't think they do know, they just unlock the functionality if you sign up. Of course if you found another way of unlocking it..

So do you have to pay even if you are on a contract?

Yup you have to pay

I changed my apn setting and mms settings to get my MMS working (check other thread) and I lost the internet tethering option all together!

Internet Tethering on OS 3.0 (non-jailbroken) for free?!

Seems someone may have found a back-door to tethering on non-jailbroken OS 3.0 phones, though early reports seem to indicate it could break MMS and visual voicemail. The method has been confirmed to work with O2 UK though.

A good point to make is don't go crazy on downloads via this method as you are of course subject to fair use still.

Engadet report

How to do it

re: iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

Yes you do have to pay. Nothing in life comes for free, especially when it comes to the iPhone and partner operators such as O2 are merely exercising their prerogative. I'm not sure why you would make great use of tethering however. At home you will be using your home BB provider - if not then its rather the wrong approach to make up for the deficiencies in your provider by using a slower mobile connection

And Maccy D and Starbucks are in every town so I do not see how you would not be using free wi-fi instead

If you are a traveller then it is cheaper to sign up for mobile broadband and get the dongle!

re: iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

It seems there may be a way to do it for free if you're desperate (link), I may hold off for a while to see the implications though - MMS and visual voicemail seem to break if you do it.

Tethering not appearing

As per title, tethering has not appeared on my phone after the update.

Any ideas how to get it setup?

If this was to break MMS or VV is it possible to restore the phone to a previous working state???

Re: iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

Hi All,

I've tethered my jailbroken phone for a while, use it quite infrequently and never huge amounts of data - trying not to arouse suspicion from the all seeing eye. I know the risks, but it's handy occassionally.

I've read that when you load a page on iphone safari the images are smaller / lower quality (not sure who the phone requests to process the image change but its probably irrelevant), and when tethering the images are usual size and this increases bandwidth usage and is one way you can get rumbled.

My question is, does anybody know of a browser add-on (firefox probably being the most likely) that allows you to replicate the functionality of minimising image quality whilst tethering? Thus allowing pages to load quicker and reducing the chance of getting caught.

Cheers.

I got this working in a few mins, won't use it much but handy when needed.

Apple's iPhoneware update snuffs tethering hack • The Register

says that the next patch disables this for US users, wonder if it breaks in UK too

Can't say I'm surprised, I bet the networks are seething that it's so simple - but you can bet there'll be a Cydia app to do it.

Re: iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

For once the official apple way (via a settings update) is the simplest. Doing it via USB is always a good idea.

but isn't this really risky if they catch you, unlike the cydia way which is impossible for them to detect unless you download loads and loads? (as far as i know)

Re: iPhone Tethering Discussion Thread

According to the tethering instructions:
Apple's iPhoneware update snuffs tethering hack • The Register

and

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/06/17...-in-iphone-30/

you have to download a carrier update and restore in Itunes. Won't this install firmware 3.1 which I can't jailbreak/unlock my phone again?
