I was wondering if an iPhone is in airplane mode or doesn't have reception for some other reason (rural area, travelling on the London Underground, etc.), are you still able to write SMSs and emails? And if so, when you try and send, does it give you an error message? Do they go into an 'outbox' and send when you reconnect to the network?

Well the iPhone doesn't have an outbox per se as all messages are stored as conversations with the person they are from/to. In airplane mode you can still read past messages and write replies, but they will remain as drafts until you can actually send them. You can only have one drafted message per conversation, but you can have several concurrent drafts for different conversations. Unfortunately I don't think there is an automatic way of sending all drafts when you have a mobile signal back again - you would need to go back to each conversation in turn and just hit the send button.
