How Much Space Will Video Use on 3GS

I can't decide if I really need to push the boat out and get the 32G. Is video at 30FPS good and if so how much space would a 5 minute clip use roughly? I know in iMovie each project I do eats up hard drive space.

Thanks

It is only VGA resolution so not going to take up anywhere near as much space as as a full SD/HD project in iMovie. I would guess somewhere around about 100 to 120 mb per minute depending on the compression applied. If you planned to use the iphone as a camcorder replacement on holiday, then you'd probably want to get the 32GB version of the phone unless you had some way of uploading off the phone. All depends how much space you need for other stuff like apps, tv shows, movies and music etc.

The tech specs on the Apple website mention VGA "up to 30 fps" which would indicate that there might also be settings to drop that rate down.

Will it be any good? Hard to tell until we get our hands on the new phone. But if 'on paper' frame rate is anything to go by, then 30spf should be more than adequate for quick grab shots that you might not otherwise get because of the inconvenience of carrying a dedicated camcorder. I've been reasonably happy with the 10 to 15 fps I get in VGA from various point and shoot still cameras. So 30 should be a lot smother. Certainly won't replace the HD camcorder though

Cheers - no it will only be for shortish clips as I would use the Sony video camera for anything substantial. The video and music I have never max out the 16G I have so I think decision made. Thanks - off to CPW to reserve......

I rarely fill my 3G iphone beyond, half way - wish I'd saved the cash and bought the 8gb instead. But that's probably because I also use an ipod touch which if got waiting for the 1st iphone to be replaced!... saves battery drain when on the iphone when I'm away for more than a couple of days too.

Seeing as you can only get the 3G S in either 16 OR 32 GB, I'd personanly say that using video and the uprated camera will use more memory than you think.

If you can afford it, I'd go for 32gb, as you're going to have this phone for at least 18 months. I'm sure apps will start getting bigger as well, TomTom etc.

Trev and Seedy thanks - you have just cost me a fortune but are probably right! I have now ordered a 32G which I will pick up on Friday morning. Interestingly CPW said that they would be getting them in tomorrow but they said I have to wait until Friday!

Re: How Much Space Will Video Use on 3GS

I've encoded my videos from DVD to play on both my PSP and iPod Touch. The files are mp4 (video ABR 300-350kbps and audio ABR 128 kbps) at full 480x272 resolution. The size of the files are roughly 80Mb for a 25 minute TV episode. About 55 TV episodes are taking up 7Gb on the Touch, but I also have fetaure films on there too so skewing the numbers.

Hope that helps.
