Setting ringtone on Iphone...

Can someone give a step by step guide as to how I set a ringtone on the Iphone.

My wife downloaded a tune on Itunes...but I am buggered if I know how to set it as a ring tone.

Thanks in advance

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

Right click on song, select "Get Info".

Ensure the song is set to less than 30 seconds by changing duration.

Right click on song again: create AAC version. Right click on new copy and browse to explorer. I usually copy this file to my desktop. Delete the copy version in iTunes

Change the copied file to file-type to .m4r. Drag back to ringtones folder in iTunes. Bingo.

Change the duration of the original track to full length.

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

There are also some websites that will do all the hardwork for you for free - allowing you to upload the mp3 you want to turn into a ringtone and then just download the finished ringtone file which you can then just double click to bring into iTunes - saves all the mucking about with Get Info, exporting AAC files, finding them and renaming them etc. The one I used (as it also allowed you to create a ringtone from youtube videos) was audiko.net - easy to use and also has ringtones that others have made ready to download.

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

Hi can these custom ringtones only be put on a jailbroken phone?

I have been playing around with the new memo recorder app which comes with the 3.0 update. It saves as a .mp4a file.

I have a file on my desktop and have tried to drag and drop it into the ringtone window in itunes but it wont let me, can anyone tell me how to get it recognised as a ringtone or am I wasting my time as my phone isnt jailbroken.

Thanks

Ive done all of that but I cant get the "drag back to ringtones folder in itunes" bit to work, this is why I asked if It was only possible to do this with a Jailbroken phone?

It couldn't be any simpler.

No a phone does not need to be jailbroken to use custom tones. I just created a ringtones folder in my music library, dump the converted file in there and then in iTunes go the ringtone section and chose file -> add file and browse to the ring tone and it then adds it to the library.

^ What he said.

Did that on my non jailbroken phone for the first time the other day and it really is the easiest thing ever. I can now have Peter Griffin 'singing' Beverly Hills Cop everytime somebody rings.

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

Well Im not getting it!

It just wont let me drag the .mp4a into the ringtones folder in itunes whatever I do. Think Im going to give up as its getting late, it was a nice idea but as usual itunes makes the job too complicated to achieve easily

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

When I used the audioko site, if you go to the 'ringtones' tab when your iphone is plugged in it should be listed there as the audioko site has already converted it to the right sort of file. Then when you sync it should appear on your ringtone list at the top under 'custom'.

Just run the file through audiko website, a ring tone can not be longer the 30 seconds, not sure what else the site does but all my ringtones work after being converted by it.

Have you tried double clicking on the file, as this works for me on ringtones I get from the audiko site.

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

Just done one on the same site it didn't work. I wasn't beaten tho.

So tried again and it worked.

The problem was the ringtones were over 30 seconds long.

So make sure any tone you're creating isn't over 30 seconds long and it should work mate.

Re: Setting ringtone on Iphone...

thanks for all your replies and patience with me!

Got it sorted late last night.

The track was an 18 second voice memo of my son singing so was never over 30 seconds.

Audiko would let me create it, but then when I tried to click on the option to download the iphone ringtone of it but it just said the ringtone you selected does not exist on the site.

Then I tried iringer and it worked first time and automatically put the ringtone in my ringtones folder in itunes.

I still cant manually drag an .mp4a file (less than 30sec) into itunes whatever I do but at least I did it in an indirect way!

Thanks again

Anyone with a Mac can easily edit and create custom ringtones in Garageband and then send to iTunes as ringtone.

However, when I transfer the ringtones into Itunes (manual, not sync), the latest ringtone shows on the phone multiple times. And the other tones I transferred on do not appear. They all appear correct in Itunes tho.

any ideas?

+1 for iringer too, ideal for the job.

I do have one question though, does anyone know if it is possible to change or add to the standard text alerts on the iphone? This is something i would really like to be able to do so if there is anyone with any knowledge on how to do this it would be appreciated.
Many thanks

I wouldn't mind changing them myself too.

1.Choose what ever song you have in your iTunes

library.

2.Listen to the song and choose a section you want.

3.Right click.

4.Get info.

5.Options tab.

6.Choose a start time.
