Sky Go app no longer working on jailbroken iPhones

I just attempted to watch the football using the Sky Go app but it wouldn't work and came up with something along the lines of

"unable to play video. unknown error. If the problem persists, restart the app" which I tried and it still didn't work.

After a quick google search it seems Sky have blocked jailbroken iPhones/iPads from using the Sky Go app! The only channel that still works is Sky news. I've only attempted over 3G, so I'm unsure whether you can still use the app with wifi.

Does anybody know if there's a fix?

The old Sky Mobile TV app still works on jailbroken devices. This only works if you had the Sky Mobile TV app installed on your current device, so if you have upgraded since then your out of luck.

To get the Sky mobile TV app back onto your iPhone.

1) Open the "app store" app on your iPhone
2) Select "updates"
3) Select "purchased"
4) Scroll down the list and you will be able to re install the Sky mobile TV app

As an added bonus, ESPN works even if you are not currently subscribed to it :D

May help

Try going into cydia and installing a program called xcon, just google what repo you need to get it as I can't at this point in time remember what repo is needed.

Sorry about that, will look into it more. It's not just sky, even some banks are using the same thing to block jb devices on their apps so a tweak will arise.

Looks like its been tied in with the new release of Sky Go on Android devices. Android users who have "rooted" their devices are having the same issue.

Just having a read on the sky site help forums and seen this answer to an android user complaining :-

Hi androidsky,

Unfortunately we are unable to support rooted devices as this breaches the contractual agreements we have with our content providers. This also goes for Apple devices which have had their software modified.

Thanks,
Garry

Does the Mobile TV app still work? I thought Sky Go replaced it or you had to pay a subscription if you tried to use it?

Is the problem related to the latest version of the app? I wonder if an earlier version may work?

Well, I may have to restore my iPad as well - but I am going to wait for a couple of days to see if anyone comes up with a fix first.

I don't think that Sky are blocking users who've JB their iPhone. Well, the message is an error related that may be caused by something in the Jailbreak Application.

If Sky wants to block JB user, the message would have been totally different from one the showing at the moment. How can Sky dictate a JB iPhone when Apple can't? I think it's impossible.

I also believe that Sky will release an update in a few days time to fix this issue

I called them yesterday, they confirmed that they had now stopped the app working (apart from Sky News) for anybody that has a jailbroken device.
It's not impossible, they've done it!
Just hope a tweak will come out that gets around it.

It does appear they've blocked jailbroken phones along with rooted Android phones and they arent the only app to do it. If it wasnt possible and folks werent doing it then why would someone have come up with the Xcon tweak mentioned earlier in this thread to get around it happening!!

I think some folk have requested the guy who developed Xcon adds Sky Go to it so it works. Apparently things dont just work with it and need to be added.

Funny, they said that. I'm a programmer and if I write a program to do something or block certain people, I would put a constructive message to tell the user.

That message doesn't look like a constructive message. I believe there is a problem with the app for JB iPhone, but not intentional.

The CS are talking rubbish

The guy basically told me that they did it because they did not want their channels being displayed on TV's with third party cables. He also said that when the device is jailbroken cydia opens the device to many security flaws, he wouldn't expand on what he was saying and I got the impression he was just reading from some kind if script.

The official line on the sky forums is something along the lines of it breaches contracts they have with providers :-
