Both will be true for this guy.

Agreed, there is nothing new apart from fixing faulty battery % levels (nothing to do with battery life) and why go to all this hassle to update & re-jailbreak for nothing.

Really?
What i should have said is, you need the older baseband to store your SHSH on Cydia anyway.
The service is useless if you already updated.

This is what I need clarification on. If you're on 3.1.2 and you're jailbroken and you need to restore - can you use the customer firmware available to do so? Even with a newer bootrom?

The impression i get is that you can only restore with custom firmware if you you are already jailbroken on 3.1.2, and then update to 3.1.3.

looks like Geohotz has been defeated by this new firmwre already, so looking to the Dev Team, but chances seem to be very very slim if not next zero.

No (unless they're talking about the iPhone 2G perhaps)

They have a long history of reselling free tools and misleading info.

The dev team and geohot are quite literally the only people in the world who know what can be done and what can't, and do it.

Scammers.

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/68156562/hello-jody

Google

They are literally selling free software from either devteam or geohot. They get around offering to unlock things that can't be unlocked by offering a money back guarantee - the theory being that some people won't ask for their money back.

They even have the cheek of placing news articles talking about the scam sites they've "discovered"

I'm still not clear. So, let's say I have to restore my phone - surely updating to 3.1.3 would ruin any potential JB?

My understanding of the customer firmware was that you use the file to restore the phone back to 3.1.2 (from 3.1.2) and its automatically jailbroken too. At least the link earlier in the thread suggests that's how its done.

Phone bought in late December 2009. I'm guessing it had 3.1.2 installed on it (unless itunes auto-updated the firmware). Anyway, I jailbroke it after a week using Blackra1n. Have no actual intention of restoring. But...'if' something goes to sh*t and I have no choice, I need to understand what my actual options are.

Sadly I will have 'pending tss' forever on Cydia as I sent my request 2/3 days before Apple stopped signing 3.1.2.

Custom firmware is one possibility, but like I said, its not clear to me if it will work or not.

From what i can understand from the tutorials, the cusom firmware way would work for you. But im not quite show with the age of the phone and stuff. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

It's not quite RIP jailbreaking, infact today an exploit was found but not released for the new basebands, stuff will still happen.

But now most people who ever wanted an iPhone now have one, the dev team all have theirs and anyone who's followed this stuff for a while has upgraded carefully and under instruction. The breaks are getting harder to find and will benefit an even smaller number of people. You could spend time on fixing it, but you wouldn't get many donations and you'd still have to buy the new hardware to test it with (because you'll be happily using your older one).

My advice to anyone who wants to carry on jailbreaking is to either get the iPhone 4 when it comes out or straight after it's jailbroken. Don't fanny about waiting!

Out of interest, if you're in an 18 month or 24 month contract, what are the legalities of selling your phone after 6 months or so and buying the iphone 4?

I guess this is breaking the terms of the contract? Insurance wont cover the new phone for example. So would you get into trouble with the provider etc if you went ahead and done so?

See that's where my concern is. Does it cover newer bootrooms (I'm week 49 I think)?

There's nothing that prevents having to use blackra1n to switch the phone on if you have a new bootrom. Other than that, it depends on the jailbreak history of the phone and the current version as to whether it can be done or not.

Sorry, you've lost me a little.

"There's nothing that prevents having to use blackra1n to switch the phone on if you have a new bootrom"

Is this in reference to a restore?

Looking at this:

http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-...ckra1n-zni327/

It includes a link to download 3.1.2 firmware. So if I'm on 3.1.2 - can I restore the phone using itunes without downloading 3.1.3 and using the firmware provided (i.e. custom) and then continue to jb with blackra1n?

Again - this is all for peace of mind if I happen to be in a position where I have to restore.

Blackra1n was designed for 3.1.2 and the reboot for teathered phones is probably linked to that jailbreak so i'm not sure that a custom firmware would work. Say you install the firmware but then it won't boot because it's on a new bootrom, there's no garentee that blackra1n would then fix that.

More confused than ever now.

So there's no way of restoring the phone with custom firmware if I've jailbroken with blackra1n? I have to - in order to make sure there are no issues - restore using official firmware (3.1.3) and then pray that there's a jailbreak for it one day, if not 3.1.3 - then the next revision?

There are no legal implications whatsoever if you do this. Your contract with O2 is for airtime provision and has nothing to do with your phone at all - that's yours to do with as you please as soon as you have bought it (See paragraph 2.4 of the Equipment Agreement section of the standard O2 airtime agreement).

Quote:
I guess this is breaking the terms of the contract? Insurance wont cover the new phone for example. So would you get into trouble with the provider etc if you went ahead and done so?
Insurance is a separate issue. If you have it with O2 then a) you're mad (you can get it *much* cheaper elsewhere, and it's also arguable whether it is even worth it in the firstplace) and b) even though it may be paid along with your phone contract it is actually separate from it. All you'll probably need to do is inform your insurer (whether that's O2 or whoever else) that you have a new phone and tell them the new IMEI. In most cases they can simply update their records and that's it, sometimes changing phone will increase the monthly charge (if it's worth considerably more than the phone you originally insured) - contact your insurer to find out for sure though.
