Hi, i have a 3gs on orange so I'm guessing it has all the newest software. I'm trying to jailbreak it with blackra1n rc3 but it just goes into recovery mode and thats it when i try and start it again it just says waiting for phone and does nothing. I'm on windows vista i changed to xp compatible in props but no joy. help!

just an update, i,ve started the process again and it still doesn't work i click make it rain it goes into recovery mode then itunes starts up i close itunes and it still says going into recovery mode and thats it, i have tried to make it rain again and it just says waiting for device! anyone got any ideas??

Try a different USB port, preferably one off the mobo and not from a card.

Also, ensure that you restore the phone in iTunes (again), then open iTunes & connect it to iTunes before running blackra1n.

+1 or if possible try another pc. As some people have had the same problem and was solved by using another pc

right youve lost me now im using a laptop compaq 6720s it has 3 usb on the left hand side and thats it i have been using the one closest to me as i look at the laptop.

If you have the latest bootloader you do realise that your phone may need to be connected to a PC and blackra1n re-run if you reboot.

See iclarified section for jialbreaking and look for the 'tethered unlock' warning.

Having same problems with a mate 3gs and ive got a mac and a windows pc to try it.
I read that apple had stopped the expoilt on new phones so the batch orange have may be like that.
Going my nut in as i did my 3gs on o2 no problem when i first got it.
Thought pwnage tool for mac would have done it but it fails badly and frezzies.

having same problem here. Ive jailbroken 5 phones all 3gs with no problems but the latest one just wont work.

I run blackra1n and after it starts to reboot the screen just stays black. itunes wants to recover. so tried again on a different computer, same result.

Anyone got any ideas?

only thing thats different is i dont think the sim card is 3g ready as i cant get any 3g reception even in very good area.

How long are you waiting before deciding that it's 'stuck' on the black screen? When I was jb my phone it was stuck on the black screen for about 5 minutes before coming back to life.

at least 10 mins. all other phones have been 1 - 2 mins tops

They can be very slow sometimes. Think of booting your PC and it running scandisk - can take a while...

so it can vary in terms of speed? seems odd but if this is the case i will give it another go.

i left mine on the black screen for 3 1/2 hours and nothing happened, tried on another computer still didn't work! got sick of it and got sick of battery life so sold iphone and got blackberry bold 9700 and im now happy

I managed to jailbreak mine last night. Got a feeling it was an old version of darkrain. I've now tried RC3 and it worked first time.

Nope still no joy. Latest version of blackra1n, 1 hour spent sitting at the black screen nothing at all. Press the 2 buttons in for 10 seconds and phone disconnects from computer and beeps to reconnect but still just sitting at black screen.

Really dont understand this how can this 1 iphone be so complicated? any more ideas?

Try running blackra1n without the phone plugged in and itunes all off, then connect it. The program does have a wait & retry and some have found that method can work. Blackrai1n grabs the phone before itunes gets it's hook into the phone.

I couldn't get it to work either so I did this.

Once Id ownloaded blackra1n, right click -> Properties -> Compatibilty and make sure Compatibility mode is not ticked.
Mine was ticked and it wouldn't work, unticked it and worked a charm.

I have 3GS with new boot loader
pwangetool does not work BlackRa1n RC3 does

Its uses the thethered jailbreak method.
I have done this on windows and mac.
Run BlackRain when phone restarts in recovery mode make sure itunes is closed
Run blackRa1n again and you should see geohotz picture and phone will turn on.

You may have issues with wifi not working to fix reset network settings

If you turn off iphone or restart or it loses power you will have to run blackra1n again

I current have it on a usb stick i carry with me just in case

The only thing is gwop when you get apps from Rocker or Cydia or whatever, some applications require a reboot (not soft reboot).

This kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it jail broken, hope theres a fix soon or better jailbreak.

This happened to me when I installed Winterboard.

Im following you but still no joy. despite now trying at least 10 times.
running latest version of blackra1n on windows XP
I have made sure all itunes programs are closed down then make it rain. After aprox 30 seconds i get the screen with the guys face on it and a window pops up saying thanks and it will be finished once it reboots. phone screen goes black and remains black after 30 mins. Click make it rain again says waiting for iphone just sits there.

I can reset the phone (holding down the buttons for 10 seconds) you get a beep from the computer to say the iphone is disconnected then when i release the button another beep indicating its connected to pc. again i can click on make it rain and it just sits there. waiting for iphone.

Think i will give up now, bit annoyed excpecially after jailbreaking 5 other phones with no issues at all.
