Jailbreak sticky still valid?

Not sure if this is a stupid question but my iphone 3gs is arriving today. I want to jailbreak it - went to the faq in the sticky which talks about using redsn0w to jailbreak. However more recent threads in this forum are discussing blackra1n. Which is correct?
