Problem with restoring an iPhone 2G to 3.1.2

I'm trying to upgrade my iPhone 2G 8Gb to 3.1.2, which I then plan to jailbreak & unlock using Blackrain RC3 & Bootneuter.

It was on 3.01 previously, unlocked & JB'd running a Vodafone SIM.

I've restored it using the latest iTunes (to 3.1.2), iTunes has been trying to activate it but I have been getting the message "The SIM card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported". So I put an O2 SIM in it (the PAYG one out of my 3G) and I'm getting the same message.

I'm desperate to sort this out and am not making any progress, I can't use it or anything. Can anyone help?
